Beautiful painting.

That's all I can say without ruining it all with my lack of knowledge of Tolkien.

I think he looks great and I love the snake down there amongst all the black, it just gives it that extra pop of color that ties the whole piece together - claps like those windup monkeys- I really love how you draw human expression/faces. - reminds you of this once more- XD

Oh, and btw. Riddle WAS handsome - JKR said it often enough! And yours definitely looks handsome.

Did you use watercolours or gouache?

Achen089 In reply to Leochi [2009-03-16 10:07:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh,thank you!I wasn't 100% sure and since a friend told me once i tend to make most of the hp characters looking pretty or handsome in a fanon way..i'm trying to be more careful.

As for the medium,i used a little bit of everything, changing everytime something wouldn't work the way i wanted. lol I used acrylics, watercolours, pencil and ink for all the black!

Leochi In reply to Achen089 [2009-03-16 16:57:22 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome! And yes, he is canonically handsome!

Ah, yes, a media mix, that's what I love to use sometimes. I like to put fine transparent layers of watercolour first and then to continue with coloured pencils. But I hardly ever use gouache or acrylics, mainly because I'm afraid the acrylics will ruin my precious sable brushes, lol. As for gouache, I don't know - I always tend to use them like watercolours, which is not the point, of course.

Damn, I guess I fail at art - even when I draw ugly HP characters, they turn out somehow attractive. 8D

But yes, JKR never stops pointing out how handsome Tom Riddle is.

But the point is, he's gorgeous. I love his sinister stare.

Hey,i'm so glad to hear that, especially about the snake as i'm not so confident when it comes to drawing animals. Thank you for your comment!

You drew a very beautiful snake! I'm sure you're much better than you think, when it comes to drawing animals. It's quite useful to try to sketch them a lot and to use references until you know exactly how the are built.

As for photo references, I used to be very reluctant about them until I read a long article by a very good trained American artist who said they were part of the art training and that they were a very sensible way to learn about things very quickly and economically. (To be honest, how often do we meet real snakes/tigers/elephants or other animals. Even common birds and fish don't pose for you, when you need them!

Achen089 In reply to Leochi [2009-03-24 23:04:18 +0000 UTC]

lol That's so true!
Though i've tried to use references from time to time but i don't know,my style doesn't seem to match with the realistic one of a photo - human parts look just so different,so wrong in measures when i work with photo references. It gets so frustrating..

But it's definatelly helpful when it comes to animals.
Thanks for your supportive and helpful comments as always.

You see, that's what I don't like about DA - I basically should go back to the thread, because I have no idea what I've written to you that made you say "That's so true" - On LJ I would just look at the comments above and know what it is about.

Oh, I can relate - it's the same for me when I use what I would call my "genuine" style. That's e.g. the Potter-Weasley Kids. I didn't use references for those, or the young redhead on the train, or most of my coloured pencils pics and quite a lot of my watercolours. I didn't use references there. But when it comes to anatomy or foreshortenings I really do like using reference material. But the styles differs and the pics look less like illustrations.

You are more than welcome for anything you want to ask/discuss!

Never mind, my dear! There are more important things in life than the net.
And I'm so proud of you that you finally have an LJ.
