Description
At the school gym, I sat there. The students around me stirred.
A talented student in my grade and school, but not in my class, played before me.
He played guitar and sang a song that almost everyone, as well as myself, knew.
But I remember hearing the song before, but this time it seemed to have so much more meaning.
Perhaps now I understood it more, or because the music was sang at a more personal level, right before us.
Perhaps it was because the Singer was my age, or I could relate to the lyrics.
Either way, I clung to such a simple song, played only by a guitar and voice, as if it was a great masterpiece.
I felt each lyric, and thought to myself deeply, visualizing what the words mean to me.
I wanted to sing along, but instead I simply closed my eyes.
I believe my lips were moving, despite my efforts to hold it back.
I remember, quite specifically a high note.
The singer didn’t seem to get the note perfect to everyone else, but the note touched me perfectly.
The note, and his voice made the hairs on my arms rise, and I felt a cold inside me.
As the sensation passed, I knew one thing.
I would never forget these years of my life, and the small moments like this.

I would have to say that within all the poetry that I had read in the past couple of days, this is the best one. Mainly because I can relate to exactly what you are saying. In 10th grade, oddly enough, I had this same feeling somewhat. We were having our end of the year talent show and this girl that was a grade below me was up on stage singing this Dixie Chicks song, lol.
I know that it's really odd that somebody like me could relate to something like that, but I did. I, too, had heard the song before and knew most of what it was about, but it didn't really register to me all the emotions and circumstances that they were singing about. I guess regardless if we notice it or not, everybody in the world connects in the same way.
So much for you thinking you have bad poetry skills because this is definitely something special and very nicely done.
