Description
Final draft of a flour sack animation assignment for university.Happy to be done with it, not that I hated doing it, far from it, but I've been drawing this damn sack over and over again for three weeks! I want something new! xD
At least the instructor seemed to overly like it, and he worked at Disney. I feel so happy that a Disney animator likes my stuff! ^^
Anyways, he gave me a good lengthy critique on this and I agree with him fully, but in any case, if I had the choice of going back and changing one thing, it'd be the "shocked by the cannon about to fire bit", the one frame seems irkingly out of place to me, like it's a mis-shot when I sequenced it. Oh well ^^"
UPDATE: I got an "A" on this! Yay!

The movement and squishiness of the sack was wonderful, and I really got a good sense of weight of the cannon ball.

So, what were the requirements of the assignment (besides showing emotion/personality with the flour sack)?

There were three scenarios you could choose from...
1) "A flour sack (start pose) and a cannon are in FG; a pile of cannon balls are in mid-ground; the sack, after thinking about what to do, waddles/walks/hops towards the pile of cannon balls; picks one off top of pile; brings it back; stuffs it into cannon; fires cannon. Create a payoff ending."
2) "A flour sack primps and preens in front of a full-length mirror. Animate the sack as if trying on a new outfit or about to go out an a date, or has woken up from a wild party the night before."
3) "The flour sack rests on the far side platform of a halfpipe (start pose); after thinking about what to do, the sack slides down the halfpipe; does a trick in mid-air after coming up the close side; slides back down and does another trick after sliding back up the far side; slides back down a 3rd time, doing a 3rd mid-air trick; the sack crash-lands on close side platform of the halfpipe; show an emotional payoff."
And in the case of all three, "Be expressive without stetching the sack beyond its capabilities."
That was the criteria, copied and pasted here

So Disney still does that to test new animators...that's awesome.

Ooh, traditional animation! Who was your instructor, BTW?
My first animation instructor was a retired Disney recruiter.

He worked on Beauty and the Beast sequels and several Winnie the Pooh specials.
For obvious identity security reasons, I can't tell you his name.

It was cute at first, but after you draw a hundred or so frames of it, the cutseyness kinda fades into "Oh, it's you again...", but thankfully there's nothing quite like drawing out all the frames then watching it in motion for the first time. Even if the animation doesn't work out quite right, it's one of the greatest feelings ever ^^

Oh yes. >w<... the feeling of achievement. u///u
It's like coloring a pic while zoomed in for hours and hours, then you finish, and then see it completed for the first time. <3

really nice story and joke in this one. At my school the floursack assignment is one of the first ones we have in 2D, and we all had to do the same thing. I think, as you also show in this shot, the floursack has quite a nice potential to it.

One of your first assignments ever in 2D animation? I'm halfway through my second year and we only got to do this assignment just now ^^"

Yep. we spend like a week or two going though basic stuff like bouncing balls and pendulum thingy. And then we did the floursack assignment. and then moved onto technical stuff - walks etc. second semester we did dialogue pieces and similar stuff.

We had to do several bouncing ball tests plus some walk cycles in profile and 3/4 views. Next assignment is lip-synching and dialogue

Man, I haven't animated a flour sack in years. I should probably give it another try; it's a good way to limber up.
