Description
I’m just testing out to see if this file works better. I couldn’t change the file type on the original deviation, so I’m making it again to see if it works. If it does, I’ll delete the original deviation and move the description and stuff to this one.
EDIT: It works! I’ll copy and paste the original description below. When you download it and import the PSD file to procreate (or whatever other programs it works with) it might have a long, funky title, but you can change that pretty easily I expect.
EDIT: I adjusted the forehead a bit so that it wasn’t quite so large. This slightly shortens the average cat height, but not by much.

Since I have to remake all of my character designs (aside from Skittles, Rosethorn, and Lucia, which were already finished and uploaded to DeviantArt) after my Procreate gallery was wiped, I also had to remake the base for the character reference sheets. Since I’m remaking it anyway, I figured I might as well share it with all of you as a resource for anyone who wants to use it. I made it available to download, and as soon as I post this I’ll test it out and make sure it works. My goal is to try and give you all a file to download that will work in Procreate and keep the layers I have set up in the base, rather than you just downloading a single image with everything already flattened. Hopefully it works.
Some notes about this base:
- there are two versions of the red cat base in the file—one that is broken into folders so you can play around with proportions without messing up the entire base and a second one that is fully flattened (I recommend keeping the fully flattened version as it is and using it as a guide for comparing your character with an average cat)
- The color palette on the left can be duplicated and edited if you have more (or less) colors than there black circles
- the cat drawing used for the above and below view is now mirrored, so if you have a symmetrical design it should be easier to mirror that across the two different pattern views
- the closed eye view is mostly there for when you have a design that has something in the eye area, such as if your character has an eyeliner look or something else that would have a specific look for when the eyes are closed
- the feet of the cat base are on the same plane, and while it may look a bit funky I did that on purpose so that I could easily compare heights between characters without there being a slight camera angle
- anywhere that there is red pencil is an area that you are meant to use as a reference/guide to draw over on a separate layer and later hide—I do not recommend tracing over every part of it line for line on your final lineart (I mostly mean this for the face area, since things like paws and back arches are going to be pretty similar across most cats) (I make this recommendation so that you can avoid creating characters that all look exactly the same in terms of shape and size, but also because you lose an opportunity to work on drawing your characters for yourself and practicing with different shapes and body types)
- the clan symbol in the back is blank, so you are free to add whatever clan symbol you want should you choose to utilize it
- I recommend that, should you decide to include your artist signature, that you place it in the bottom right near the corner of the clan symbol (if your character has a long tail that gets in the way, you can always move your signature a bit) or write your username along an edge of your character (I tend to go with the front right leg since it’s out if the way of important details)
If it works and you use this base, please let me know, as I’d love to see what awesome characters you make with it! Happy drawing!
