Description So this is my entry for *ichiko-wind-griffin 's contest. Guess I should write a backstory for this dude.

BUT FIRST, READ THIS TO KNOW THE BACK-BACKSTORY AND MYTHOLOGY BEHIND IT: [link]

Keoni Rock is a direct descendant of the shark king and Nanaue. When Nanaue was running wild and crazy around Maui, he also had several children. But because of a spell that caused all mythological creatures to become human that was cast on the globe a long time ago, his children were born human in appearance, much like how Nanaue was born human in appearance.
So several generations pass and soon enough Keoni is born of a seemingly human mother and father, in Hawaii. Traditionally, his entire family is strictly vegetarian and eats no meat whatsoever. No one knows why, but up to this point, everyone has respected the family tradition. When he was very young, he moved to Madison, Wisconsin and grew up there.
Keoni was picked on in school for being a vegetarian, and the other kids would constantly try to secretly sneak meat into his food as a joke. He didn't think it was funny.
Soon enough, a couple years before he was about to graduate high school, a student finally succeeded in convincing him to try a bite of fish, even if it was just a tiny bit. He was even going to be paid twenty bucks if he could eat it and not spit it out, too.
Keoni succeeded, and got the twenty bucks.

Only catch was that he started to feel very ill during school that day. Of course, he thought it was the fish he ate, considering his body has never eaten any kind of meat before. He was sent home for being sick with a stomach ache...

How very wrong he was...

So long story short, he turns into a hungry shark-man, which makes him rather unhappy (as anyone would be, if you turned into a hungry shark-man). He is not limited to just water, as his more human-like limbs allow him to travel on land. However, after his first transformation, he found that when he returned to human form, his vision was poor. Not telling his parents about this, and too scared to say anything to anyone, he had the school nurse give him an eye exam. Soon enough, he had to buy prescription glasses.
However, he found out that in human and shark form, his vision is perfect underwater, and so is his sense of smell. Also, he can see in the dark in his shark form.

Normally he's a little shy from being picked on in school for being a vegetarian, but instead of becoming even MORE shy after finding out he's actually a shark-man, it gives him some confidence... over-confidence. Soon enough he starts stirring up trouble just like his ancestor Nanaue once did...

Basic physical characteristics:
Hair: Dark brown (none in shark form)
Eyes: Dark brown (green in shark form)
Skin: Dark and tanned (but striped and gray as a shark)
- He has NO special characteristics like tattoos or scars or anything that would really distinguish him from anyone else.
- He is of Hawaiian lineage, not Indian or Native American or whatever.
- He is defensive and has low self esteem, which makes him come off a little bit like a jerk, but he's not a jerk. He's just overly defensive.
- The smell or taste of blood or any kind of meat can cause him to transform, so he still tries to remain vegetarian after finding out what he is. As much as he tries to curve his desire to eat meat, it only gets harder for him as time goes on.

[[[ And one last note to Ichiko. If you choose this character (which I doubt because the backstory is lame), you can fill in any missing gaps or change/add anything you want to fit your story better, because I know that I'm not very clever when it comes to fitting things in.

I was wondering if I could use this picture on my blog, I'm making a list of mythological creatures and I would like to use this picture to illustrate the nanaue.

Ay sorry man, unfortunately this was specifically for a contest for my friend, so I can't, BUT... I'm gonna be posting more sharkman mythological characters like this pretty soon on this account, so the next one i post I'll let you know if you want to use it.

Thanks again for the consideration!

No problem, I could only ask and thanks for letting me know once you post more sharkman pictures. I really like your artstyle and I hope to be able to use one of them.

The tale of the shark king was the only Hawaiian tale I've read.

It would be pretty cool to be a descendant of Nanaue.

Haha I thought so too. I like sharks, and the idea of a shark shapeshifter is pretty scary. C:

I like how you drew this. It's kind of a shark with a lizards body.
The story is quite good as well.

Just a non human name suggestion for you. Lot of people call this "Shark man".
How about "Land Shark"? I think it sounds more intresting.

Activoid In reply to matt-bulls-stories [2010-09-02 22:20:09 +0000 UTC]

I considered Land Shark briefly for that reason, but in shark form he still requires water, and I've never heard of any creature called a "land shark" before...
I was trying to base the character on existing mythology, and the Hawaiians never called the shark-man a "Land Shark".

When you think about it, the word "werewolf" isn't so interesting, either. It's just old English for "man wolf". LOL. Since "were" comes from the Latin "vir" which means "man".

I really do appreciate the suggestion, though. Thanks a lot. <3333

The only other thing this reminds me of is an old kids program called "Street Sharks". However I like your design alot better.

... Haha Street Sharks... I remember that show. I wish someone would remake it with a serious story and better art and character designs... *coughs in Ichiko's direction*

Only difference being I'm not sure if Keoni can walk on two legs. I imagine he would walk and run more like a lizard or a dog... And because his skeleton is more cartilaginous, I'm not sure how that would affect him...

It appears you did your research on sharks by using large words. I like the S shape you have got in your drawing. It looks like he’s storing energy like a coiled spring. This also makes the body look quite flexible. As far as walking on two legs is concerned, I guess he could for a few seconds standing still (like a dog begs). There appears to be a compression in the back legs that suggests a greater freedom of movement. I did a little bit of research for you and found a possible match in the lizard world. β€œThe Jesus Christ lizard” can run across water (may be a power your character could discover). So he may be able to run on two legs unless he uses the tail for balance. Hope this helps you at least a little bit.

Activoid In reply to matt-bulls-stories [2010-09-07 21:54:36 +0000 UTC]

Well the Jesus lizard is of small size and weight, so it has no problems running across water. Not only that, but its long toes on its back legs work as paddles that dig into the water and push it backwards. Because of the weight of the lizard, it is able to apply force to the water to push itself forward.
But this wouldn't work for a creature of Keoni's size. He would have to be able to run impossibly fast, have long lizard-like toes that spread and work like paddles, and have a very lightweight body. All of those factors have to work for him to be able to run across water.
None of which are the case.

Also, it's an entirely useless ability if he can swim and breathe underwater.

But thanks again for the suggestion. xD

It's nice to see someones putting some real thought into their work. I think it's the best entery so far as it really stands out to me.

An intresting fact: We see these space films with lots of things exploding. That really would not work in real life because there's no air, so not fire.

Thanks again. <3

In addition to your interesting fact: we see this space films with lots of lasers and explosions, and we HEAR them. You wouldn't be able to hear sound so well in outer space because it's a vacuum~

No problem! You have a real talent there... I wish i was as good at anatomy as you were!

Awww haha I'm actually terrible at anatomy, but I take it as a great compliment that you think it's good. <333
If you want REAL flawless anatomy, though, check out *Sara-DiGiacomo 's gallery. She took a lot of figure drawing classes, so she's a million times better than I am when it comes to drawing anatomy. Of ALL living things. SERIOUSLY.

Perhaps... But not by much. I like your anatomy a bit better then her's, and your art style is pretty amazing, better then her's as well!

this is immense, I really love just how...likable keoni is! (a trait I find very hard to give my own characters)
also, his shark form looks amazing, I think he could wipe the floor with my Kelpie any day XD

Thanks a bunch! 8D

Haha I'm not sure if likability is a trait that you can just give a character, so that's probably why you supposedly have a hard time with that. THE TRICK TO MAKING A CHARACTER LIKABLE IS THIS: don't try too hard. LOL. |D
actually i have no clue, but thank you for your compliment! <333
