Description
Here are some digital sketches I've done in attempt to find a style I like. I've been playing with lighting to find a nice horrific feel. I want Z to appear both pathetic and frightening, like a corpse or zombie.I'll update this with some interesting traditional sketches of it later.
Tell me what you think!
Update:
Tons more stuff from my recent sketchbook, late 2009 - May, 2010. For the sketch of Kryb, I didn't have any decent references, so she ended up with three boobs. She might as well anyway. Also, sorry for the overload of Z, as most people don't care so much about it. It's my default character to draw when I don't have anything specific I want to.
Again, please tell me what you think, even if you commented before!
I'll move this to scraps later, I think.

I Think the second row, right picture is looking the going towards the scary/pathetic combo for me the most. Maybe a "flashlight" effect would work too (ie put the light source below the face).
..but Z's pitiful expression nicely contrasts with the harsh lighting. The lazy eye and scrunched brow are the main conveyors for that.

That Fred is glorious! The light and shadow of his beard mane alone. So creepy and unpleasant I just adore him!

I could envision Z walking on a sidewalk like it was on a tightrope or with some other awkward gait. Also, that is one huge taco!

Haha. Z actually has horrible balance and walks with the grace of a cripple.

I agree on the top right. Hatch lines and dramatic lighting are great for creating creepy.

Yeah, I love using dramatic lighting for that reason. Thank you!

I love the stylization you made with the lighting here, fff.
I personally love the top right. It evokes to me what you said you wanted. Creepy, yet also kind of pathetic.

You really nailed the eerie effect on the latest two by reducing your use of gray by as much as possible. The contrast deepens the appearance of Z's sunken, thin features and conveys emotion in a striking way.
I take it you'll be featuring him in a series of his own?

Ooooh thank you!
Yes, it is the protagonist of my main personal project. I haven't given out too much information on it currently because it's very much in-the-making.

Z is amazing, really.
I like the one on the bottom left, But I could be a little bias, as that's how I draw my Night Reaper comic. And the bottom right is the best one out of them all.

There's definitely a beautiful (yet terrifying) stylistic evolution you got there.
I like how Z has gone from a very scrawny, somewhat naive frame to a progressively more fleshy and realistic one all while still maintaining a sense of style and grittiness that you've been working long and hard to achieve. One thing I especially love in your latest sketches is the elimination of midtones and the confidence of your lines. There is a sense of freshness as well as a certain softness present, which has evidently "humanized" Z. Not just in Z's more realistic apprentice but also a conveyance of emotion, the essence of what it means to be a human.

Thank you so much! I didn't realize that the elimination of midtones created that effect, but that's interesting! This means a lot to me to hear all your thoughts, and it's very encouraging.
