I suppose the light ripples would be much smaller and more plentiful in relationship with the size of an object underwater, like this whale ([link] ) but I could add a seaweed forest, or more around the main character? But then I might loose the effect I wanted, to keep the image simple and the character as the main focus, in the deep blue sea. (though I could play with lighting and have her as the brightest object, keeping anything else added in the shadows? Any suggestions?

Btw, looking at your work a bit more, I don't think there's any issue with a sense of scale. I think the ripples and bubbles do a good enough job of that.

I was talking about the photo you posted. Unless it's just me not knowing that I'm looking at a fishing rod in the foreground, I could not get a sense of scale to know how big the waves are, you know? If there was a little boat with a person on it, I would better understand how big the waves are in the photo you shared.
