I love the soft feel of this portrait, accented by the contrasting golds and purples of the background and fore.

Really a splendid painting from life... it's always refreshing to see a masterfully painted piece created from life, as opposed to simply copied from a photograph. I'm quite curious as to whether you started this painting directly on the dried toned surface, or if you painted wet into the toned background.

Thank you, I've only used photos on a few pieces that were commissioned, otherwise I always work from life. This was started on a piece of canvas that I had already painted over twice and scraped off. I have always painted wet into a toned background but recently I've been moving away from it. I'm currently experimenting with such surfaces and I find a worked on canvas gives me a better feel of the paint application.
