Description Maxima makes her interests plain to the Captain, even telepathically assuming the angelic form of his wife to try and encourage his receptiveness, yet she finds herself taking an interest in Nathaniel beyond the practicality of extending her royal bloodline.

While i'm a fan of the idea of Powergirl and Captain Atom having a romantic relationship built on their friendship,Β  Maxima and Captain Atoms brief but actual romantic relationship in 1993 to 1995 in the comics was a likeable but short lived idea.

After they had met and the Justice League had split into three, i tended to see Maxima more or less filling the position of unofficial right hand that Powergirl once did in Nathaniel's team, the main difference was that Maxima largely applauded and encouraged Nathaniel's increasingly aggressive and proactive approach to superheroics, where you would have expected Kara to have -quite rightly- reined him in ( during this period Powergirl was in a team led first by Hal Jordan and then by Wonderwoman ).

Even after the relationship abruptly ended Maxima did seem to have feelings for Nathaniel, which from a woman who regarded love or romance as unimportant, was more than she ever previously expressed for Superman, even if she did start hounding Superman again, which felt like lazy writing ( they could have at least had her gone chasing after Lobo ).

She wasn't quite that direct, but she wasn't far from it

That's just her way to say hello to a potential mate. Plus while she looks like a gorgeous woman, I wonder how geigeresque she is biologcally speaking !

Great job! It's quite interesting how you've built a lot of your gallery on the early-'90s era Justice League. One of the characters I found interesting from that era was Maxima. She's gone underused by just about every writer since, but I liked the potential that she had. She was so unlike the other superheroines for the reasons you cited above. She wasn't hung up on the same ideals of heroism that the other Leaguers were.

I'm a fan of unusual pairings and this one here definitely fits that description. Maxima has almost always been stuck as a "love interest" for Superman, so it's always great to see when writers and creators try different things with characters. I like what you've done here for these two. Captain Atom recurs frequently in your gallery and I like the consistency you give the character. You're able to capture him very well and I like the texture you're able to give him with colours. However, I'd be lying if I said that Maxima wasn't the star of this piece. I think she looks great and I like that you chose to give her a larger build. Her expression is very fetching and you did a good job on her hair.

Overall, this is a nice piece that really celebrates two characters who really don't get as much attention as they should.

Thanks I do have a lot of affection for the era, and for the Justice League in it's International form, it had some great characters and Maxima was one who almost broke away from being just a thorn in Supermans side and developed as a character. It was a shame when she got killed off in the early 2000's.

The Maxima/Captain Atom relationship was unexpected ( i still pair off Powergirl and Cap ), but since Cap is generally considered comparable to Superman in power, it did make him suitable to Maxima's initially pragmatic interest, and he did have a more receptive attitude than Superman ever did. It was a pity it didn't last, but different writers have different ideas.

Again, thanks for the positive comments

I really enjoyed her. One of my favourite runs during that era was when Dan Jurgens took over the flagship League title. I really loved his team and having Maxima on it was a really great bonus.

Power Girl certainly goes after those Alpha Males, huh? Including that awkward scene where she confesses to finding Superman hot. Ahh, the inconveniences of a fluctuating origin. The great thing with both characters actually is that they can be freed of love interests and still be fascinating. No woman should ever be defined by the man she's interested in, fictional or otherwise.

I do still pair them. This picture was just taking a look at Captain Atom's mid 1990's relationship with Maxima.

Yep, and after Captain Atom she approached Amazing Man, Aquaman, and then started after Superman again.

At the time she was busy in a different team with her own unsuccessful love life, being refused by Aquaman, and more or less scaring off Green Lantern/Hal Jordan.
