I love this design too, and really wish there was a story alongside it !
We could make it together

In my experience, protection at that kind of places is almost only used by archers, but never on both arms.
Designs of hidden weapons sometimes use protections as covers for their subtle mechanisms, but here, there's no access from the hand on the same arm.
Maybe some fragile stuff is hidden underneath each, and accessed by the opposite hands ?
