Description
This is a detail from the Rogue litho I just finished for Sideshow Collectibles; it comes with the Rogue comiquette if you order the exclusive version. I just posted the whole image a few moments ago.Since my hand is messed up, I couldn't pencil and ink this the way I'd like. So, since I needed to make sexy lemonade out of this mess, I took my original concept illustration and just colored & painted it in Photoshop.
Before anyone asks, here's the reasons why I cropped it... First, I thought that the Black Cat print was dull, and one of the reasons is because it's full figure. You don't NEED a full-figure print of the character.... because you have the statue! You can see her toes THERE. I decided to crop in so that the piece would be about the face and the body language. I also cropped in because time was tight, San Diego was looming, and the AC was out and it was 95 degrees in my house.
As for technique/method.... I took the original high-rez Grayscale scan, cropped it, and converted it to CMYK Mode. It looked the same. I then used things like Variations, CHannel Mixer, and Hue/Saturation to change the gray values to have hues. At that stage, it looked like an oil painter's underpainting.
I then went in and built up the highlights using the pencil tool set on 10-21% opacity to slowly build up my "brush strokes" and give it an analog feel.
The highlights on the latex were accomplished using the lasso tool and my color Fills set to Screen or Linear Dodge.

Can I ask what resolution (both size and PPI) you usually work at once you've scanned them? I can't seem to find the right one, my art always looks too small on previews but you seem to always nail it

Thanks for the background on your PS techniques. I've just gotten into coloring my work digitally and I'm using whatever I can glean from your work and comments you've made concerning it.

Okay im pretty adept in photoshop as far as photo-editing but not of your calliber MY GOD! This is Complex as hell yet so flawless lmaoo (you should print a book of all your works and sell it in barnes & noble or something like a portfolio everyone can see I'd buy like 3 copies of it ahahaha). But anyways. Is there any online tutorials you know of that specialize in techniques you use ?
First and foremost Can you major in Graphic design & media design and still be a professional Comic book artist or no do you have to major in other fields?.
& Rogue is hot. Ahahahaha.

I'm afraid I must own up to the fact that I'm not much of a comics afficionada. Having said that, I must add that I have always loved the examples of your work that I have come across over the years. I truly believe that your art transcends what I think of when I think comics. I have genuinely enjoyed tripping through your portfolio.

Thanks for the kind words!
I personally believe one of the ways to keep one's medium fresh is to diversify & bring different ideas to the table. By drawing my comics work in a slightly non-traditional way, it keeps me from preaching to the choir.
I'm glad you enjoyed the prtfolio; please watch as I will be adding constantly!
Thanks again,
-AH!-

It took me a little while to figure it out, because she looked like someone I've seen before. Then it hits me, she resembles Ashley Judd a little bit. Nothing wrong with that. It's definitely one of the warmest southern smiles I've ever seen. Beautiful work!

But of course the colour version is best, but there is something--an added playfulness or youthfulness, perhaps--in the lineart that I really like.

I stand speechless to your art. EVERYTIME.
I just hope you don't mind a couple of basic (dumb) questions:
-I didn't understand where your lineart is? In a layer above the color (and set it to multiply)? or maybe it's the opposite? or do you paint on the same layer as your lineart?
-I feel so slow but I don't understand when you say: "change the gray values to have hues. At that stage, it looked like an oil painter's underpainting." I'm really sorry, I've searched google but it didn't help. How does it looks like? do you mean you have veils of color over the lineart?
Thank you and forgive my english mistakes.

SL1Cer In reply to AdamHughes [2008-08-02 16:18:46 +0000 UTC]
Even though I know just a few pin-up artists, he's the best I've ever seen.
The colors, proportions, and most important thing, he's never trashy (don't know if the word is correct...).
I'm sick and tired of artists who are drawing lots of t&a, and never use the body language. Hiding things is the best way to let the imagination flows... Anyways...
I really appreciate you took some time for this feedback. Not everybody does it.
And even though I entered in the comic world with the Michael Turner millenium edition, it's when I first saw your work that I found what kind of work I want to do. Thank you, because it helped me reaching the level to be accepted at the Joe Kubert School ^^
I hope your hand will get better, and I wish good luck for all your plans !
Iyane
P.S. : By the way, Taschen is selling a book with lots of Elvgren's paintings, and it's very cheap !
So if you're interested, there's a link with informations. Hope you like it !
