Description
This is the cover I did for the hardcover trade paperback collection of Dark Horse Comic's first SERENITY comic-book miniseries, based on Joss Whedon's tv show & movie.Yet another digital colorization of a gray tonal drawing.
18" X 27" on sketchbook/pad paper; pencil, ink, marker, white paint, Berol Prismacolor pencil, and then Photoshop CS2.
FIREFLY was the bestest, shiniest tv show. Ever.
At the very least, it was my favorite.

I loved your work on this series! The artist who did the interiors was also awesome, though I can't remember his name right off the top of my head right now... But it really added another layer of wonderfulness to the whole thing to have the characters actually LOOK like they're supposed to. If Mal hadn't looked anything like Mal, and Zoe hadn't looked like Zoe, etc etc, I probably would have lost some interest... and I LOVE Firefly/Serenity.

Why was that show cancelled? Beats me. The story was good and judging by the movie, which was obviously a "pack it with everything before we have to close shop" movie, it had a good plot down to the end.
You really are good with portrait, you not only are truthfull to faces but also to the spirit of the characters/actors.

Hmm, I'm in the middle of watching the Firefly episodes, and I can't for the life of me understand what's so special about it. I saw all those interviews and stuff, and everybody talk of Joss Whedon like a goddamn genius, but to me the show appears amateurish, badly acted (especially the captain) and ultimately boring. I'm still waiting for the great part to come up, but I guess I'll waste my time in vain.
So what is it with Firefly?

If watching the show doesn't convince you, there's nothing I or anyone else can say that'll change your impression of the series. It just might be somthing that isn't for you, or your tastes lie in such different directions that you don't get what the fans of the show love about it.
And that's not meant to be a slam. There's a bunch of popular stuff that I just don't get; I cannot fathom why all my friends, all of whom I have similar tastes with, LOVE it I am baffled as to why.
FIREFLY probably just isn't your brand of vodka. No harm, no foul.

You are right, I think the show just isn't for me, but just like when everybody laughs about a joke and only you don't get it, I desperately want somebody to explaint the joke of Firefly to me. But then I understand that an explanation still won't make the joke funny

Sometimes I'll read or see something that doesn't affect me in any way. In some cases, I'll revisit it later on in life & perhaps something about it THEN will strike a resonant chord.
Maybe give FIREFLY another try in a couple years...?

"gray tonal drawing," does that mean you did all the stuff in pencil working with values first? Then you went over it in photoshop and applied colors on top of it?
