Depending on how I'm feeling at the time, it's either gels for the overall colour and a bit of colouring in Photoshop, or all coloured in PS.

Hmm, you mean using the pen tool to draw colored shapes along the outline, then setting opacity and applying gaussian blur?

That would produce an attractive effect, but that's not how I do mine. Use the pen tool with a soft brush and set the mode to color. Then paint on the colour that you want to use, and experiment with opacity, as 100% will probably be too bright.
