Description Did some interesting things with shaders in an effort to make the fur easier to postwork / improve appearance.

Let me know what you think!

Freaking awesome job. I'd like to know how you did it but I know it's way beyond my skill level and patience.

Nah, it wasn't that hard or any great leap / idea. I made a gray scale noise map in Photoshop. Then I used the levels filter and and kind of fine tuned out some of the extreme black and extreme white.

Then I went and took the UV Template for Jager and using the noice map I made as a source for the clone brush, painted in the displacement. Then it was just a matter of adding the new displacement map and tweaking the settings.

Of course, what I *didn't* do and still need to do, is go back and create more logical (based on location on the body) levels of displacement in the map.

HTH

Wow! Great anthro!
May I ask what legs are you using?

It's an entire figure... Called Jager. Available here -> [link]

wow dude. I saw many anthro animal in modell, but this is the best.

Glad you like him! I wish I could take credit for the mesh, but I can not. The mesh was done by Amahdi and can be found here [link] . I can, however, take credit for the displacement map to create the fuzzy look.

only way is to set up new matzones that I know of.

Actually I think I can control it by the color of the noise map... it just requires a lot of experimentation.

Noise map? Well I wish I could put Raw's Displacement maps on it. Right now screwing around making an avian tail for his BirdCult and my gryphon that looks right.

Using the noise filter in photoshop I created a displacement map... so in theory by adjusting the levels (ie, black and white values) of given areas of the map I should be able to control how much displacement occurs... that's the theory anyway...

Not bad Adam.. Wish it had a good displacement map for a better fur look.

The shorter fur looks kinda more like fuzz -- I like the effect on the lower legs, where an animal would probably have short fur like that anyway, but not so much on the face, neck/shoulders, and hands. Maybe more varying lengths of fur?

AdamTLS In reply to Arixa [2010-12-13 14:08:04 +0000 UTC]

That's a very valid point! I need to learn how to adjust the displacement map to make that possible. Right now I'm doing this with what amounts to millions of little dots of varying colors from pure black all the way up to pure white... In theory the pure white should be the longest but considering I used the noise and levels filters in Photoshop to generate the map I didn't have a lot of control over what went where and ended it up with something that was moderately uniform in length.

Arixa In reply to AdamTLS [2010-12-16 23:56:27 +0000 UTC]

Wow, complicated... There must be some way to adjust the length, though. ^_^

Hehe yeah, I think I can do it with levels in photoshop... Just haven't had time to try it yet.

I'm impressed that you've been able to get this effect just by using bump mapping. You certainly won't be able to give the illusion of long fur in the same way, but whatever 3D program you're using is likely to have a fur/hair tool of some kind that you can learn to master.

Thank you! I do wish that DS had a hair tool... that is, sadly, one of the shortcomings that it has (that and no soft body collision / dynamics in general).,

RestrainedRaptor In reply to AdamTLS [2010-12-17 23:44:59 +0000 UTC]

What is DS? I hear that Poser has fur tools, and it's free, so you might be able to port your work to that, at least for the fur part.

AdamTLS In reply to RestrainedRaptor [2010-12-19 18:10:55 +0000 UTC]

DS is a competitor to Poser... and last I knew Poser wasn't free (at least none of the versions I've paid for have been free). There is a hair tool in Poser, but as I don't care for the app, I've never learned it.

RestrainedRaptor In reply to AdamTLS [2010-12-20 22:26:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh... I thought there was a free version of it. You might be able to get a free copy of an old version like Poser 5 or 6 if you look around. You can also get a free trial from their website, which should be enough to let you decide if the tools are good... or otherwise, enough time to render some cool things.

AdamTLS In reply to RestrainedRaptor [2010-12-21 01:02:54 +0000 UTC]

I own Poser 5 and 7. I just don't like the way it works... Heh.

Aww! OK then... Good luck then, however you manage to achieve it.

Looks really good - especially on the body and arms and legs. I am not sure about the face, somehow it reminds me of a stuffed animal with plush surface. Maybe it's the inside of the ears?

AdamTLS In reply to Kerya-Alexis [2010-12-13 12:53:02 +0000 UTC]

Yup! I haven't quite worked out how to apply the shader in such a fashion as to avoid that!
