Description So here it is, as mentioned in my my Journal. I'm extremely happy with how the plants and environment turned out in this render. I think it might be one of my best renders.

Centaur is about 9' if he's standing up straight. Horse body is standard Drafthorse size or so. The forest sprite is about 5' tall.

Please download to see it in its 1920x1200 size glory.

Ok...I promised you a critique, so here we go... e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

I know alot of work went into getting the natural scenery just right. And it paid off! You've got a very complex but realistic pathway with a rich mix of flora in place. Lighting is very well done and the shadows/direction of light and the distant/obscure background also are all in agreement. That's an important, as the human eye will pick up those details no matter if the viewer is fully conscious of them or not.

The pair of mythical beings are also well suited to the setting, a possible nymph or dryad in her 'native' environment and a centaur friend. The models are well lit and show a nice, naturalistic lighting mode. Their pose conveys a sense of old friends enjoying a quiet stroll together.

However, this brings me to the only criticism I have of the composition: The centaurs right arm appears to be at a peculiar angle that is a juxtaposition to the otherwise very natural stance and body posture. Otherwise, this is probably one of your best pieces to date, Adam.

Thank you for the critique. I know how hard they can be to write. ^_^

I totally agree on the arm thing. I just couldn't figure out what to do with it. LOL.

I'd suggest moving it closer to his body, to hang naturally as some of us do when walking?

I think that when I go to San Diego I might leave my machine re-rendering this with DoF and a few corrections like that.

Awesome work! What forest did you use?

I built it using a variety of different products.

Hey, Adam, I like how this works. The lighting is well done, did you use UE2 lighting here for Area lighting? Besides that, I like how you use plants in this. Geeze, why does there have to be grass . . . I'm jealous of other 3D artists having grass. LOL!

This looks like an actual forest scene, very good job here.

This is a composite piece of several renders. The main image was rendered with 3 distance lights and raytraced shadows, but NO ground. Then a render was made with deep shadow maps and a shadow catcher to create the shadows on the ground. Resulting shadow catcher image was used as a multiply layer over the ground texture for the path which is from CGTextures.com. Everything was layered up in Photoshop and the results are the image above, there's very little other post work. Just some touch up here and there.

Fwiw: There are two squirrels, 1 bluejay, 1 robin, 3 hares and a rattlesnake.

AdamTLS In reply to Gothfan1 [2010-04-11 23:22:30 +0000 UTC]

Hehehe, thanks. The snake's probably the hardest one to find. He's coiled up right in front of one of the rocks on the path, near where the path turns back behind the cliff face. He's very much in the shadow, but if you look careful you can see him and a bit of his underbelly where his tail rises up.

Using the download version will help though.

I love this, seriously. And I have to agree, from what I've seen this is one of your best pieces and is very detailed. I don't think it needs to be changed, but a fun kind of experiment could have been some DoF settings so that the path behind them isn't maybe quite as in focus. Of course, this IS coming from a person that has YET to be able to set things like that up on purpose!

AdamTLS In reply to chellethecat [2010-03-25 12:49:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. I'm glad you like it. You might be surprised to know that I actually tried DoF first... but the render hit was enormous. That's a problem with plants in DS/Poser. There is so much transparency, adding something like DoF would've probably pushed this into a multi-day render (3 hours was 1% w/DoF, AO, and Raytracing compared to 3h5m to finish each pass for AO/Raytracing only). So ultimately, it came down to my impatience in leaving it out.

chellethecat In reply to AdamTLS [2010-03-25 20:33:21 +0000 UTC]

LMAO Yeah, good point with the plants. I don't use them a lot so I always forget what they can do to a render.
Then again, DoF by itself can be a beast. Either way, the image is lovely as it stands, and I love their height difference; made me giggle.
