Description
An old and deeply flawed commissioned sketch of DC's character Lobo... Note that I screwed up the, uh, perspective on his pecs (now, THERE'S a phrase one does not often hear), and the fact that his face (well, his CHIN, mainly) is more than a tad asymmetrical. Oh, well.Much of my work displays a MASSIVE right-hand bias, alas... I generally don't have the time to "mirror" or flip over a piece to check for bias/ distortion in my art, so I usually have to just wing it (and "use the force," if you will), "eyeball" the piece, and hope that the resulting degree of asymmetry doesn't wreck the illo entirely.
Note, young(ish) artists, that you should NOT do what I've just described, not if you're committed to actually improving your work. Using shortcuts such as "eyeballing" will NOT help you over rough (artistic) patches, nor help you learn new techniques that could possibly supercharge your work. More on this seemingly hypocritical "do as I say, not as I do" philosophy of mine later...

I like him in the side with a pin and paper. I will always see him like that to draw.

Hmm apparently I looked at this and commented it in 2008.
I also failed to give it a actual critique which I apologize.
First off, I do like it is a good drawing of Lobo but I do have some minor critiques.
I do think that his Czarnian facial markings are off.
His "mustache looks to much like a mustache when it isn't actually a mustache (the comic never nearly states what it is but I am sure it's safe to assume it's a facial marking cause it is never shaved or anything.
I think it just needs to look a bit more spiked up, as it did look in his older comics.
His "eye make up", again Czarnian facial marks seems much, much bigger than they probably should be. These aren't really bad, I just think they are a bit to big but it's not really a deal breaker on your interpretation.
Lastly, I don't think his hook is a hook. To me it looks more like a akama or a sickle on a chain. It's not even poorly drawn it's just that Lobo carries pretty much a massive meat hook on a chain and that doesn't look like a meat hook. His nose also seems a bit bulbous but I am sort of nit picking.
You have some good positives though I like the way ya did his hair and his vest, which looks like leather which you seem to be the best in the business to draw stuff like leather, it's like when you draw Emp her costume looks amazing. Overall this to me is still a good Lobo pic.
I've been a Lobo fan for years and have been following his appearances all across the DCU both the good (such as his comics) and the bad (giving him a stupid red lantern ring). This version of Lobo looks good, and it a major improvement over the current Lobo they have in their monthly "Weird World" mini comic series. The artist on that did a horrible job with him. The artist in their sort of did some of the same things you did, mustache is off and he's not as big as he should be. Lobo is a massive man just a mass of utter muscle and machismo. Still your interpretation captures him pretty damn well and it's nice to see him.
I wouldn't mind seeing him redone now with your current ability's as you improve as you go (all artist do, least I like to think we all do). I would like to see him done up again, and I hope my art critique gave you good feed back. Looking back at my first comment in 2008 I just came off sounding like a mook without giving it a real critique. With that I am sorry for that comment for not being helpful at all. As a fellow artist I should be able to give you creative criticism to help you improve and vice versa.

Of course, your "winging it" is still 10,000x better than my most carefully proportioned and aligned artwork ... Although I hardly ever carefully proportion or align my drawings, so I guess that's to be expected.
Thanks for the advice.

Bring on the philosophy Adam, I love it when you do that. And actually, I think the piece is pretty cool but I like hearing your thoughts on your own work and art in general.

My fine art profesor has been telling me all year "No one is perfectly symetrical", and although there is abit of truth in that, it's good to see a pro artist that's just as (and i'm sure more) anal about symetry as I am.
I think he is talking more about portraying realistic pictures with "character", rather then strict illustration though....
Good work, regardless of the wonkyness...which I probably would not have noticed if not pointed out

i hear you on the eye ballin thing.... when i read that Jim lee does the look from the other side thing, I started doing it too and it's helped out so much! I use to have things be a bit out of wack, some things were a lil lopsided and now i can get them more on point because of this useful strategy, =]
Love the lobo though, i think you did him justice=]

Okay, I'll take your suggestion. But to be more clear on what shouldn't be done, what's "eyeballing" exactly?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
onegemini In reply to Twinsnake-Coatl [2007-04-24 17:53:58 +0000 UTC]
In this case, he's talking about looking at something to determine correct proportions, symmetricalness, etc., without actually using methods to determine if those things are done well.
So instead of just drawing a face and saying "looks good", he suggests you go the extra step and check if the proportion is correct (ideally, one eye space between eyes, for instance) and flip the image (hold it up to the light backwards, or to a lightbox, etc) to determine if it is wildly asymmetrical, because most people draw with a bias to their dominant hand.
Yah Adam? That what you were going for?
