Description
Here's a scan of a cover illo (circa 2000) intended to show different stages of artwork in progress, from blue-penciled rough to pencils to inks to finished colors (as ably rendered by ).This cover is from one of the How To Draw Manga books that Antarctic Press released back in the day. For the record, I would never presume to tell anyone how to draw manga per se as, well, I don't technically draw manga as such; all I would say is that my artwork is manga-influenced, and leave it at that. Howeva, "How To Draw Comics With A Manga-Influenced Flava" doesn't make for a very striking title, does it?
Then again, the title could be watered down even further, as I've never really done a serious "How to Draw" feature, nor am I ever likely to.* Alas, "Hey, Here are Some Random Art Techniques That A Primarily Manga-Influenced Artist (That Is, Me) Happens To Use" would be too cumbersome a title to use.
Anyhoo, I'd done a lengthy interview with the great that covered a whole bunch of art-technique issues; excerpts from that piece were patched together with some random artwork of mine, and the results saw print in the How To Draw Manga books.
Side Note: Is there some reason why deviantART doesn't have a subcategory for "covers" under the "comics" heading? (Along with pages, strips, etc.) Given how frequently that comics pros post cover illustrations here, that would be pretty damn handy...
*Even the old "Basic Training" piece I did for Wizard magazine [link] was more about analysis and presenting different artists' approaches than a straight-up "How To" dealie.

I remember issue 1 of "how to draw manga" like it was yesterday... the sweaty store I bought it in, the way it cost more than other comics, the way it made me believe that it didn't matter where you came from, you can draw in whatever style you want to. I love it.

An excellent suggestion. With the recent DA focus on new idea/suggestions I wouldn't be surprized to see something like that added in a future update.

You could alway call it "How to Draw Manga-ish". That's short and clear.

Yeah, a "covers" category would be very handy; that and maybe a "characters", "superheros" or "original characters" section...
I remember seeing this book! Your art is very distinctive

I've taken a lot of stylistic advice from the images in these books, and your style has continued to influence mine over the years. Loved the leather jacket, bob haired badass chick there too.

I had almost every issue of this series when I was younger. I think your segments were my favorites, I remember the issue where you showed how to draw leather jackets.

Actually, I think that would be an awesome title for a book and I think you should use it if you're ever inclined to do another book like that.

How to Draw books are always tricky to write, because it's like trying to write a single book on "How to Get a Ph.D. in (Subject)". You're compressing YEARS of development into at most a few hundred pages, with an audience that can range from "can barely manage stick figures" to "fellow pros looking to steal a few techniques".

AWESOME!!! i also start with the blue pencil. it's really great to see how detailed another artist is at the early stages, this helps me quite a bit!! also i still love how you do leather/shiny materials.

It certainly would be handy for them to have a "Covers" category.
I remember this book! A friend of mine had it and I borrowed it once XD I got some tracing paper and traced some of the pages so I could have copies in my sketch book to refer back to...in hindsight I could have just made photocopies, but I think I learned something with the tracing paper.

Your inks were always pretty great but I have to say I'm so, so glad you've mostly ditched them now, or at least for the majority of Emp work. I admire good inking but in the last few years I've really come to realise how much they take away as well as add; I think that if pencil work is done with the same degree of care and soul as yours is, ink is largely unnecessary.
