Commission from Anime Central 2017; Copic marker, ink, white paint pen, charcoal pencil.This is easily the saddest request we've ever had. Sapphire scans every possible future for one where Ruby doesn't have to stay shattered, and finds none. Absolutely heartbreaking. But there's a power in working with such extreme emotions, and sometimes a beauty in tragedy, and while it hurt my heart to draw I also felt moved while doing it. Not that I'd want to do this kind of soul-rending commission all the time, but hey - sometimes going to a dark place can help you grow.

The emotion in this image was perfectly captured, in my opinion. From the angle to the expression to the pieces of the ruby (that look like blood drops, which makes it even more sad-), I felt sad just looking at this. (That's not meant to be offensive; it's a good thing ;<; ) I especially like how she's crying out of both sides of her eyes; that was a really nice detail. Wonderful work!

Nailing emotion with only one eye to work with was the biggest challenge of the piece.

So Sad. I actually had a similar idea for something like this set in an alternate universe, only Sapphire is the one shattered and it ends up affect Steven the most; almost in a Justice Lords kind of way.

Eesh. I don't think I'd want to see SU go dark like that. I mean, it can get heavy for a minute, and the emotions are real, but the whole point is the perseverance of the human spirit and the ability to overcome that hardship with the help of friends, family, and an open heart. Going all "darkest timeline" with it would defeat the purpose of the show. But hey, that's just my take.
