Description Commission from Heroes Con 2014; Copic marker, ink, white paint pen, charcoal pencil.

Wally West is my Flash. Always will be. No matter how much they try and write Barry as if he were Wally, there's just no comparison. If you want to read some Flash stories that will change your life, you go and find the collected editions of the Mark Waid run on Wally West. In particular, "Born to Run," "The Return of Barry Allen," and "Terminal Velocity," along with the first few Impulse collections. It's the best Flash has ever been, hands down.

When I was asked to do a commission of the Wally West Flash by a guy I've done a lot of work for in the past, I was told it was specifically because he knew how much of a Wally fan I was. I decided to make this piece a tribute to the Mark Waid era. Green Lantern made me love comics - Mark Waid's Flash made me want to make comics.

I hate the disrespect Wally got in the "New 52" from Crisis to Infinite Crisis, He was THE Flash... Waid turned him from a Sidekick into Barry's Equal or Dare I say, Superior... Once they brought Barry back he went from the fastest Man alive to Comic book Limbo.. Yet another great character with great history out and out ignoredΒ

The whole New 52 is better off ignored. There's very little to like and a whole lot to drive you crazy. DC used to be my favorite publisher; for a number of years, I was buying a dozen of their books every week. Now, I get none. I want none. I'm not even that emotionally invested in the characters as concepts, with how horribly they're handled in the books and movies. At least I enjoy Flash and Arrow on TV, but that's no substitute for how good the comics used to be.

I'm with you there... The only DC title I find Marginally interesting is Injustice... I read through some of the early stuff.. the Johns GL run.. and then it just got.. kinda meh... I mean, I opened up a GL issue at a B&N the other day... and was wondering who the hell this New GL was and why people called him Hal....

Ha! Wally West! I propably got introduced to him from wrong side (Justice League TV show) but I always loved this character.Β

I can't say I'm deep into comics but I red a bit of his history and well... still in love whish there was more of him ^^

And I'll definetly try those comics.

I'd say JLU was a nearly perfect way to be introduced to Wally. You did good.

Great!
I must say I was always a bit sad that there was so little "his" moments in the frenchise. But beating Brainiak was the best thing in whole show. Not counting whole episode about him of cours ^^

Great to see some love for the true Wally West after the new52 fiasco.

I don't have a problem with the idea of Wally being a black kid - I have a slight problem with him just being another Jason Todd, and that a black kid automatically has to be a hoodlum in need of a father figure before he spirals into prison. It's a result of them giving Barry most of Wally's personality (because the real Barry was a bit of a dull boy, honestly) and therefore having to make Wally EVEN MORE extreme to maintain distinctness.

Anyway, most of New52 is a wash. All that hype and what stories will last out of this? I think the only story that will last is the story of the debacle that the reboot was.Β

Awesome work on Wally

I'm gonna watch the CW Flash show now for this (plus his comics are awesome)

I'm very hopeful for CW Flash. Everything I've seen so far is pretty positive, and Arrow was a surprising delight.

IndeedΒ Β

It's very accurate to it's comic-book roots and the costumes as well

Wally and Stewart, THE Flash and Green Lantern. Everyone else sucks.

Well, now hold on... it's never a good idea to start getting so hyperbolic. There are other good Flashes and Green Lanterns, and other great Flashes and Green Lanterns. We all have our favorites, and we all have our reasons why, but to say everyone else sucks is just a bit too far. I like the enthusiasm, though!

I would have enjoyed seeing that. I'm picturing something like those long hallway scenes in the old Scooby Doo where Shane's chasing you through the doors and you're popping in all over the place. Or maybe a Benny Hill-esque fast-motion chase.

Wally was the more compassionate one.

AdamWithers In reply to ssjthug [2014-09-15 18:07:20 +0000 UTC]

DCAU Wally was pretty close to the comics' portrayal. In a lot of ways, the Batman, Superman, and JL/JLU cartoons were the "perfect" DC. I'm not sure it's ever been as good or as pure as those shows.

Yeah, those were amazing. Bave and the bold and GL:TAS were only came close as hell tho

Really? I always thought Comic was kinda diffient to me. then again Haven't went into the Maid Waid run nor his own series.
