Description This is a tall ship I started drawing in sept. 04, and that I finished not more than a year later...
The ship itself is called The Indifatigable. It's mentioned in the Hornblower series, as Captain Pellew's ship that Hornblower serves on, known as "The Indy".
The ship has also existed in real life, and served in the Napoleonic war as a Raze, a re-built Ship of the Line to a Frigate.

The reference I used was from the Hornblower series, and was at least two different ships, if not more. I also used some digital reproduction of the real Indy to supply with, since I don't really know what a ship looks like and my references was rather crappy (as always).
I modified it quite a lot from the one seen in the Hornblower series.

The sea was a nightmare to draw, and I wish I painted it instead, I think that would have given a better and more realistic result.
Please notice the little men all over the ship!

Finished 31. August -05, Pencil 2H to 3B + mechanical. Size A3

"It's the Indy!" Yay!

Good job. Those ships can get real fiddly with the details, I found I had to simplify the detail with my digital rendition of her (deck view). Love anything Hornblower

Hehe, it really is! Darn, it's been years since I saw that series! Maybe it's time for a re-run?

I remember what a painfully delicate work this was, both trying to merge the different reference ships together, and picking out what, and what not to focus on.
Ships are notoriously difficult just for their pure complexity, but that's also one of the reasons we're fascinated by them, isn't it?

Yeah, I agree, I found myself getting bogged down by all the rigging when trying to do some ship art. I eventually had to omit some details for the sake of certain art (eg a Hornblower Meme) as it looked better that way and didn't detract from the figures. That's the good thing about being an artist, we represent what we want, the way we want.

Wauw, this is lovely. You speak of your first ship - I think it is an excellent reproduction of the Indy, myself being a loyal Hornblower fan and also been standing on the deck of the real Indy, the Grand Turk that played as the Indy
And the hardworking crew running around and doing their duty, they have been noticed. Although I still cannot get the eyes from the vessel itself.. It is very beautiful to look at. Oy, ye have the stern windows! I stared at those on the real Indy for several minutes.

You've been on the "real" Indy? That's quite cool!
All I have is a lousy drawing on my wall

Being a crew on a tall ship is one of my (many) dreams. It's something about old fashioned hard work, that is really appealing. Especially on an icon, as a tall ship is.

The real Indy, the Grand Turk, was present at the Bastille-day in Rouen in France together with many other tall ships. I was quite surprised and spent quite a long time gazing up upon the fact that there was the Indy herself..
I even have a little book about her, you got one when you entered the harbour

I would like a drawing on my wall if I had money to order.

Oh, now there's an event I'd like to participate in! The only tall ship I've seen "live" is "Statsraad Lemkuhl", which is a marine training ship in Norway, that was ancored up in Bergen when I was there several years ago.

Hehe, I know I wouldn't sell that drawing of mine for ever-so-much money, so don't worry I love it to death...

Spaceman-Chris In reply to adavesseth [2005-09-20 13:36:39 +0000 UTC]

lol, have you noticed that in the early episodes when Hornblower and co were lost or out at sea, someone would see a ship, and shout "It's the Indy!" and a particular peice of music would play triumphantly... it always brings a smile to my face.

Hey, Hornblower rocks and anyone who tells you otherwise is a fool! I only wish they made more of them... there's still plenty of books in the series!

Hehe... Hornblower rocks, agree with you in that.
I hope they make more of them, at least the two next ones (4 and 5), where he's in south america and tyrkey (if I'm not totally mistaken). I got a bit bored by the books after the tenth, I think the six first are the best.
Anyway. Blah, blah... I'll stop chatting now.

This is I think, by far, the best work I have seen from you. I actually thought it was a photo when I looked at this, and it takes a lot to get that reaction from somebody.

I love it, keep it up.
