I think there ARE evidences: Gaster's battle data(ATK DEF HP EXP) is made of 6 and the Mysteryman can only be seen if your fun value is 66. Gaster's theme can be found in soundtest room when fun value is 65. The mysterious door in waterfall is grey, which is connected to gaster followers. As he disappears you'll hear the same sound effect as one gaster's follower disappears.
Some theories say that mysteryman is a gaster follower, but unlike any follower, he never speak a word, he appears alone in an isolated room, and his color is black and white instead of grey, also he is more difficult to be seen than gaster followers. Thus he cannot be a gaster follower either.

Im not saying more acceptible. Im saying more likely and making more sense. But you're right. Fandoms dont give a fuck about facts. If a charackter looks cool they make him something he's not. Example: This gaster thing, Making masky and hoody proxies/creepypastas even tho they are not etc. 
People probably thought: "Hmm this guys secret? Oh thats cool- WAIT HE LOOKS LIKE A SKELLETON? Ok we'll make hims fucking gaster, so we can say Pap and Sans are his sons." Wich is bullshit 2 btw
