In fact of the matter. The plot of the pattern one wants the impossible. What if Dorian changed their preferences, or simply in love?

Let's leave the gay characters gay. There are so few of them in the media already. Plus, it was specifically stated that Dorian is into sausages exclusively.

If people can make straight characters gay for fanfiction and fanart, then how come it can't be the other way around?
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
cherrytopp In reply to Porrie14 [2014-08-06 09:31:50 +0000 UTC]
Because every other character in media is straight?
It's all about representation. There is not enough homosexual characters anywhere at the moment, nor is it normal to have them in media (without going OOOH LOOK HOW PROGRESSIVE WE ARE WE HAVE ONE TOKEN GAY MAN GIVE US COOKIES) for the reverse to be an acceptable thing. And actually it's not an acceptable thing at all. Ever. LGBT+ community has to cling to every representation they can get, and straight people want to take what little they get as well? That's damn selfish.

Porrie14 In reply to cherrytopp [2014-08-06 17:30:34 +0000 UTC]
Like I said earlier -- equality is a two way street. I have 0 problems with the LGBT community getting the recognition, support, and representation it deserves. However, it is no one's place to hate on a piece of fanart simply because the creator changed a character's sexuality.. because it's done on a daily basis, gay or not. That's all I'm saying.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
cherrytopp In reply to Porrie14 [2014-08-06 17:34:13 +0000 UTC]
Two way street? How is that, pray tell.
Just because it's done on a daily basis doesn't mean it gets a free pass. It doesn't. It absolutely doesn't. When somebody does a bad thing, you don't just let it slide because everybody else is doing it.
And it's not hating. Far from it.

So, gay characters should be kept gay and straight characters should be kept straight? Everyone should be kept how they were originally created, fanart or no?

I also wouldn't rape, kill, practice witchcraft, or steal from people, all of which are things that are frequently seen in fanfiction and fanart.
Lol I said earlier that I didn't even know the character. I was just appreciating the fanart before I saw all these ridiculous comments.

Would you force somebody of a certain sexuality to be a different sexuality just so that you can get off?
(Plus, in this case, Dorian is a character from a game that has not even been released yet. Don't try to act as if he's been round for years and years and it's allowing for a character development.)

I’d say just let them be.
Fandom will do what they will, and there’s only so much you and I can say. I still think turning gay characters straight makes me... raise my brows, to say the very least. But debating with people who don’t (or probably refuse to) understand, on deviantart of all places, is probably not a hill you’d want to die on.

Part of me wants to keep arguing because this is really fucked up and part of me does want to let it go, because in most cases it's a lost cause.
I mean. It's really fucked up and it pains me.

Oh, I don't refuse to understand, sweetie. I have a very open mind. However, it's very close-minded of you to take the stance "leave gay characters gay, but it's alright if that straight character can become gay." In what world is THAT considered equality. It's fanart and fanfiction -- get over it and get over yourself.

coraltum In reply to Porrie14 [2014-08-06 21:14:05 +0000 UTC]
I'm not for arguing with you over a piece of fanart.
But for all this talk about equality, I'm just going to point out that it (equality) only works if everyone starts from the same place (sgba-resource.ca/en/concepts/e… . The starting point? Gay characters are few. Straight characters are everywhere.
But it's fanart, and like I said, you do what you will and I can't stop neither you nor the fanartist.
That's all I'm going to say. Otherwise, carry on.

That link had nothing to do with anything we were talking about -.- yes I will do as I will, and so will you and all you other extremists. I see the point you're trying to make (with gay characters being few and straight characters being abundant) but the first step toward equality is acknowledging that both sides should have fair say. The bottom line is: equality shouldn't be bent just to suit one group's needs; it should be bent for both. In fanart and fanfiction, let gay characters be straight and let straight characters be gay, not let gay characters stay gay and only straight characters be gay. It doesn't make sense.

You're set, then. But you're assuming that I like to make straight characters gay. I actually don't. I prefer my straight characters remain straight. I like my canon enough that interactions like this in fandom are infrequent.

coraltum In reply to Porrie14 [2014-08-06 03:59:44 +0000 UTC]
Now, I've got to step in...
I think you should be able to do what you want in fandom. But it does raise the question "why would you want to take one of the few canonically gay characters that already exist and make them straight, when there are a lot of characters who are shown to be canonically straight?"
But since it's fandom, you just do what you will.

Lol I don't even know who this character is; it's just a really good piece of art. If it works, it works, and there's nothing wrong with that. Equality is a two way street.

The problem of making a straight character gay versus making a gay character straight is that one can compare it to what's known as 'whitewashing'. Making a gay character straight is erasing gay visibility. Meanwhile straight representations are everywhere. The reverse situation doesn't have the same implications. Making a straight character gay can't be seen as erasing straight visibility because it's EVERYWHERE. To go back to the whitewashing analogy: One could compare this to (in theory, I'm not sure if this ever happens) making a poc character white versus making a white character poc (Person of colour, for those who are unfamiliar with the term). Making a poc character white is whitewashing and racist because it erases poc visibility and changes something fundamental about the character and something that wasn't at all wrong. Making a white character poc, again, doesn't carry the same weight because white people are everywhere and have visibility. Not that I'd condone either.
Equality is all fine and well once the scales are balanced. But they aren't. The scales are still tipped in favour of one group versus another in a lot of cases and not just the ones listed here.
That aside, people are allowed to fantasize and often forgo a lot of things for the sake of fanfic.

I just don't like the idea of art being restricted by the laws of our backwards societal structure, nor do I like that a fine piece of art (GOOD art, like this) being bashed on because the creator had a different vision from the majority. Isn't that what makes a good artist? One who has a vision and strives to achieve it? I get it: representation is an issue in the gay community, POC community, Atheist community, etc. but in order for the scales to be "balanced" as you put it, these communities need to learn that equality is a two-way street. I've said it, and I'll stand by it.
