Coloring books for adults seem to be all the rage these days!  Every book store I've walked into, the very first display I see is for coloring books.  With so many people asking for permission to color my linework these past few months, it appears that I need to be jumping on this bandwagon.

While I currently only offer my linework for coloring on Patreon , I am considering creating a fantasy-themed coloring book, featuring 40+ of my linearts, both old and new.  Elves, romance, nature--everything one might expect from my work!  You can see a few examples of my past lineart here:

What I would like to ask is: how should I go about this?  CreateSpace?  Lulu?  I'd like to offer both digital downloads and a printed coloring book.  Does anyone have experience with self-printing coloring books, or can recommend a course or indie publisher that does?  Maybe you just love to color and have purchased a handful of varied coloring books yourself--can you tell me your experiences with paper quality and what you like to see?  Do you prefer to buy in print or to download and print out your own copies?  If in print, do you prefer stapled, coil or perfect bound books?

And lastly: if there any images in my gallery that you would particularly love to see included in the book, please let me know!  I have base linearts to almost everything I've painted, not just my pencil pieces, so anything goes!

Thank you all for reading and for being awesome! Your support keeps me going!

Thank you so much!

I know it has been a very long time in coming (I've been working on this project over two years now, whew!), but if you are still interested in a huge fantasy art coloring book from me, the "MeadowHaven" Coloring Book Kickstarter is now live! 52+ pages and lots of extra printed goodies!  www.kickstarter.com/projects/a…

The book will only come to print if there are enough people to back it, so your support would mean everything in bringing this book to life! Any help in spreading the word would be greatly appreciated, too.

You should go for it!  Mine never seem to be complicated enough for an adult coloring book.  I started a kid one a long time ago, but after three drawings, I was done.  lol

The idea is cool. I'm sure the project would be successful. I have printing-house experience only for comic books and that paper isn't good for coloring. But if you discuss your goal with them, I think that there won't problem.  I could suggest that check it personally and choose a paper what has structure to stop the slide of pencils.

Sounds like a wonderful idea!  I know it would do well with your beautiful art!  I don't know much about producers of coloring books, but something simple as a regular coloring book (not with fancy binding or anything) would probably be fine.  And I guess it would depend on the consumer with regards to which medium (book or printable copies).  Perhaps you could try a few of both and see what sells best?  That way you can see which one to focus more on, if that makes any sense.  You could even make the books where the pictures had perforated edges, so the consumer can tear them out and use them as gifts, decorations, or what have you.  So if you do that, the binding may not be as much of an issue.  Again, you could try carious things and see what works best, or maybe have a more special kind of coloring book that a little more expensive for those that like the fancier stuff...hehe!  Just some ideas.

As far as what pics for the book are concerned, I love any and all the pieces that have mass amounts of detail in them (like ones with Faerin and the like).  That makes for a good challenge, especially for those that want a lot of good coloring space.  And mixing things up (say some fan art, and some personal art) always makes for a good contrast.  if you want to tell more of a story, you can use personal art and put the pics in a certain order.  Again, just more ideas.  Can't wait to hear what you come up with!

Coloring books are very calming when I'm having a panic attack, and I've loved your art since I was a teenager. You've been a big influence on me.
I will adore the book! Thank you!

Thank you so much! I'm really hoping all the hard work will pay off in the end. I'm honored that you've been following my work so long! It makes me happy to know that. It's my wish that others will enjoy coloring the pages as much as I have enjoyed creating them over the years.

The biggest thing I noticed when shopping for a colouring book for my mom was paper type.  The absolute best ones I've found have heavier paper, and some of the more popular books have recently been reprinted on heavier paper.  This allows for people to use markers as well as dry media.  I'm not sure if any indie publishers are offering heavier paper at a reasonable price, if at all, but if you find someone who does you should definitely give them a look and keep that in mind.  Having that heavier paper also gives the books a really nice feel to them, a bit more grown up and sophisticated compared to the flimsy pages of colouring books marketed to kids.

Smooth paper, spiral bound is probably the way to go, from my own personal experience both drawing and coloring.

I actually don't like spiral bound stuff for art because it's uncomfortable when my hand rests on it.  I also find them harder to stack and shelve.  That being said, I would rather have spiral bound than perfect bound that won't lay flat when the book is open.  It would depend on how the publisher does it.  Spiral might be a better bet in this case, since it's guaranteed to lay flat simply by the nature of the binding, but it also might turn some people off because of the hand comfort and storage things.

Few years ago I was looking into self-publishing places and heard a lot of bad reviews for Lulu, so personally I wouldn't go to them. The only other one I do know is Blurb, you can check them out and see if it caters to your needs.

I found the colouring community really prefers books that can lay flat and have paper that doesn't allow pens to bleed through and that the pages are not printed on both sides.  There is this Facebook group that always tends to take the pages out of the book and then coil bind them for ease of colouring but others just like lay flat books or pages they could put on a clip board to color if they are loose.  I also noticed a lot of these people in this Facebook group also likes to take stuff from Pinterest (I noticed once someone took the commission I had from you and colored it, there is always messages there saying that Pinterest isn't a viable place that has free downloads, but people take anyway) and things that are in black and white to colour. I don't know if this helps any.

Oh my! Yes please! I prefer to download my images to color so I can use my own paper. All of your images are amazing so picking would be hard. As a colorist in a large group on facebook, I can tell you what most look for in a coloringbook. Most prefer single sided paper so they can use markers and not worry about bleed through on the other side. Most do not like thin paper so cardstock would be a good option. Also a lot prefer perforated pages so they can be taken out easily and framed. I have a few artist friends who published their coloring books through CreateSpace. Please keep us all informed because I would love to buy one if you do decide to go through it.

There's lulu.com that helps you print books only when they're ordered or something like that. The Etherington Brothers uses it for their Sketchbook collections.

eta: they recently made a blog post for publishing coloring books:

oh! and to answer your other questions regarding my preference - i like purchasing physical books if they have a good binding. like if i can open the book and lay it flat while coloring, that's awesome. recently amelia kickstarted a coloring book and she had the flat binding option (not sure what it's called!). i have a copy and it's really awesome. the book can still be purchased here:

ameliasmagazine.bigcartel.com/…

otherwise, after purchasing quite a few types of coloring books and having issues coloring between pages, i definitely prefer printing it out myself so the digital option is awesome.

also i really love your artwork! cannot wait for you to publish this coloring book.

Thank you so much!  Digital might be the best way for me to go until I figure everything out with paper and printers.  ^__^;;

Would it be possible to link me to a few good digital coloring books you have purchased?  I'm curious about the format and details for digital books made for printing as opposed to reading.  I really appreciate all your help!

techmess In reply to AdeleLorienne [2016-03-23 13:16:46 +0000 UTC]

so sorry for the late reply! got a bit busy with work!

with regards to digital books, i haven't purchased proper ones yet because everyone's still printing out physical copies. but i've been going to random websites to get some free stuff to print out to color:

www.coloring.com/

www.coloring-pages-adults.com/

i assume the paid ones would come in higher resolution so we could print it out on A3 paper instead of just A4 or whatever. that would be useful. *-*

if you're thinking of going digital, the other new thing is that there are now apps available so people could color on their tablets as well. so there's that option too. there are these available:

huebertcoloring.com/

www.papertrell.com/downloads/M…

hope that helps! <3 *-* looking forward to getting hold of your coloring book!
