I think she looks a little more scared than gleeful.. but I'm not sure. I do agree that a nice forest background would make this pic a keeper. and yeah the knees are a little small.. but hey some peeps just have small knees, no?

Faces are fine, I'd rework Malon's left hand to look less cartoony (bend the finger a bit or give the hand a better angle) and her knees aren't wide enough ; it gives the impression that she has twig sized thighs.
The rest, positon, movement, expressions, hair, etc. rocks my socks. This pic screams to be completed.

Sometimes, you just need someone else's point of view. That's why in high school, me and my friends used to correct each other's drawing and papers.

The faces are what? That's not true, they convey a lot of emotion, Malon looks genuinly gleeful and is probably feeling like a little girl again, judging from that expression, Link looks to be enjoying her company, it's pretty much written across his stoic smile and always assuring look.
What else could you do to it? Color it, of course, add the forest bg with a nice, shining sun, streaming light down throughout the treetop leaves, making the moment a memorable one for both of the cute Hylians.
Why didn't the game have scenes like this? That's why I love Zelda fanart so much, it's a beautiful thing to see my fellow fans elaborating on the story and relationships in ways that Nintendo did not persue, and because I have such love for the series and grew up with it, these fanarts are just that much more precious to me.
