Description
I was almost there. I had managed to surreptitiously obtain entrance to the hospital ward safe while posing as a charity official. The nurses, overworked and hassled, were happy to just let me get on with whatever it was I had told them I was there for - except one: Staff Nurse Julia Feldman. She was experienced and suspicious and kept asking me for more details of the organisation I worked for and wasn’t at all convinced by my ID. But eventually she was called away to deal with a patient and I scarpered. Here I was, the patients’ and staff valuables burning a hole in my pocket, just yards from the hospital exit and the anonymity of the main road. Then suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, a blue uniformed figure appeared in front of me, blocking my path. It was Julia.“Hello, Barry, if that is your real name,” she said to me, a slight smile on her lips, “I think you may have some cash and valuables from the ward safe on you!”
“Don’t be ridiculous!” I blustered but already people were looking at me curiously. “Let’s not do this out here, Barry,” the nurse said to me persuasively, “let’s go back to the office and talk it through there.”

Later, back in the ward office, with the wallets, debit cards, jewellery and cash laid out in an incriminating pile on the desk in the middle of the room, I sighed wearily while Julie bound my hands behind my back.
“What gave me away?” I asked the woman wryly as she finished tying me up.
“Your ID,” smiled the staff nurse smugly, “I checked online. That badge of yours hasn’t been used by the charity for over five years. I knew then you were a fake.”
“Clever you, miss,” I sighed miserably.
