Description A small spider web under the midday sun diffracts light in a most impressive way.

This effect is emphasized by the shallow DoF produced by the 100mm macro F2.8 L IS USM wide open.
Basically, this is just a very special bokeh.
Please note that the part of the web in the background produced some very interesting geometrical shapes. At any rate, this image is placed under the sign of geometry; the amazing work of the spider should not be hidden behind the optical miracle.
The full resolution picture contains almost one million different colours (934517 to be precise), which I find rather impressive for a simple web!

Well now that's really a special bokeh effect! I can't figure out what causes the retangular shapes..
Looks as if the web was vibrating or something, yet you used such fast shutter speed so I don't know..
There are still some round bokeh elements in the non-web background so I guess that kinda supports my vibration theory
I give up! Anyways, great photo, really stands out from the rest of the spider web shots, very original

AdMalamCrucem In reply to RS-foto [2014-03-20 20:08:39 +0000 UTC]

Well done, you figured it out right!
There was indeed a rather strong wind for this web which just kept on moving extremely fast. I could hardly see anything with my bare eyes because of the oscillation, but it was counterbalanced by the shutter speed.
And thank you for the comment!

I tend to agree with the vibration theory fro the rectangular shapes.

I am even more interested in what caused the wavelength banding. What is raining or had rained or wet somehow? Even then,  I do not think some of the colors would occur just by light diffraction. However in conjunction with the motion, the camera sensors might detect them that way.

Nope, the atmosphere was dry, and so was the web, I think.
You might consider taking a look at that other similar picture:

In the other picture the spider web has dew on it and it makes sense - a little anyway. The color segmentation is not as defined through the light spectrum as this one is.

I don't know. It is very cool though.

Yeah, it's something, isn't it? I hardly believed it myself when I saw the pictures. I couldn't see it properly with the naked eye because the web was in the wind and kept on moving very fast.

Yeah, the fact that it is natural impresses me too! However I think this effect would be rendered differently with any other lens. For instance, I also took a few pictures with a 300mm telephoto lens, and it produced a much rounder bokeh...

That is very interesting!! I would think so too, every lens is different.
I am just in love with this capture, it's one of the most amazing spider
webs I have seen. The colors are intense, as you said there are so many.
So impressive and I can look at this for hours. And the rectangle bokeh
instead of the normal circles or hexagons, is the finishing touch to an
already stunning photo!! I keep coming back to it
