As warships evolved, so too have their weapons. One such case of evolution is the Republic’s choice in forward-facing armament in order to mitigate the decrease in available firepower in chases or head-on engagements.
Instead of a separate system, the ‘weapon’ is actually an array of collimators and field generators mounted around the ship’s bow thruster, which packages the exhaust plasma into a tightly-wound blast or beam (depending on the configuration of the collimation array) that is capable of melting through even the thickest armor.
