Here's the MechSWAT pic I promised. What we see here is a group of school friends measuring their heights in comparison to a building. To put things in perspective, the tallest girl there is a Cat-12 Shifter, the tallest official Shifter category. Bigger blond girl is a Cat-10 Shifter, the smaller girls are Cat-3 Shifters and the boy in their shadow isn't a Shifter at all. We also see a pair of Bloodhound mechs (piloted by Andy-13 and another Andy Unit, most likely Andy-28) on patrol.I made this pic big to kinda test how big my comp can render, and this came out admirably. Enjoy.

They're Shifters. They're normally human-sized, they can just grow if they want.

It's mostly chosen by common sense (ie not inside buildings), but many places have a height limit. Like, a carnival or amusement park wouldn't let Shifters grow more than a certain margin just to limit accidents and stuff. And Shifter criminals actually get manacles/cuffs made from a steel/lead alloy put on their wrists and legs, since such an alloy doesn't grow with a Shifter and is durable enough not to shatter easily.

Not quite. Shifters are humans, but due to an unknown circumstance, around 100 years ago some genetic mutation emerged that granted size-altering abilities. They are still human as anyone else, they can just grow. And the upper tiers of Shifters (basically Cat-10 thru 12) also have harder skin and muscles while they're bigger, but that doesn't really affect anything unless you plan to fight one.

Of course. There's a number of folks who dislike Shifters for a myriad of reasons. Some are jealous of their ability, and others are fearful of what they could do. Fortunately, these folks are the minority compared to the folks who are just "meh, so you can get big."
