Ah, that's okay. Violas are subject to a lot of ridicule from other instruments, as it often gets the most simple parts in orchestra music - but as a violist myself, I think that some of the pieces written for it are quite nice.
But let's be honest, more people would have seen your (wonderful) references if you just called it "Violin at Rest" xD Β

How do you tell the difference between a viola player and a violin player?
Usually by the size of their head.

Got a violin just like this for my daughter for Christmas. Β I'll be damned if I can't figure out how to play the thing to at least get a note from it
Sad thing is, she's been taking lessons at school for 5 months now, and she can't get it to make a sound either.

This might sound strange but is there enough resin on the bow? It helps the bow grip the strings (or something like that) light pressure should be applied when running the bro across the strings. These were the two things that I messed up with when I started.

She over rosined it when we first got it, so we were not surprised when she couldn't get a sound. Β That plus it hadn't been tuned. Β It's been tuned for 2 weeks now, and she rosins up her bow for 10-15 seconds every time before trying to practice at home with it. Β Still no luck. Β I've told her to see if she can't get her instructor to play it and try and get a note from it. Β If her instructor can't get a note from it, should I consider it defective?

If no-one can get sound from it then the easiest solution would be either new strings or a new bow, you can but them online or in music shops, If that doesn't work then the music shops also offer a repair service.Β
Other then that I'm not sure, I've played the violin for 7 years and only really had problems when I started. I hope this helps

A violin needs to be tuned everytime you use it. I believe at the start of each lesson, her teacher is setting the violin up. As she only started, she cannot do that at home while practicing, but her teacher doing it should be ok for now. As for not being able to get a sound out of it, various reasons can occur. Either she still needs to practice (I sounded really aweful when I started!) or as you mentionned, resin problem. The strings must be cleaned often too, since you put resin on the bow, it will stay some on the strings and therefore need to be cleaned. Both the bow and the strings should be cleaned regularly (piece of cloth is fine!).
Then depending on how the violin is, it might not sound the best. Cheap violins really sound aweful to my ears (I've seen some for a hundred bucks, and they sound horrible sadly). The price of the violin often needs a better sound. When you try them out before buying them, you can tell how big the difference is!
If still unsure about the violin, ask the person who made it (where you bought it). The teacher should have also tell her few tips about how to take care of it!
