Hello! I'm criticizing your for for the Feedback Frenzy Contest II: First of all, I LOVED the warm tones of the photo. This is gonna be a short comment-sorry for that- but the ONLY thing that can be done to make the photo perfect is to not have the head. Either have the whole body or just the hands. For my taste this would make the photo much more attractive. I think the head there is not suitable for the photo. Overall, this is a great photo. Well done

"Fingerprints" by

I could not be happier to write my first critique on such a beautiful example of minimalism, which I also happen to love.

Minimalism is difficult to pull of effectively because you work within an extremely narrow structure. You cannot rely on embellishments and flare to reveal your visual narrative. You as an artist have to break down your concept to its absolute essence, and then present that in a way that draws a passerby into the work. It is also very demanding of the viewer. It requires your investment as an observer to really get to the heart of the artist's intent. The more time you spend with the piece, the more you get out of it. You have to be willing to mentally and emotionally have a conversation. Because of this, it is possible for the casual observer to just pass the piece by and not give it a second glance. But to those who give these kinds of works a chance, they end up walking away with great rewards.

This photo has been very well crafted in both the concept and execution. The overall atmosphere is both haunting yet warm, a solid juxtaposition that drew me in as an observer. I commend Adriana for taking a subtle risk in her composition by setting the subject outside what I would consider to be a traditional use of the rule of thirds. This is possibly part of the charm. The photo is visually balanced but undeniably unstable. The vast amount of empty space causes me to feel slightly uncomfortable but not openly threatened. Passive aggressive might be closer to what I am trying to communicate. I am not entirely sure... Either way there is a void; my mind disparately desires to fill the space with something more.

The color choice and lighting certainly play dominant roles and have really, for me, revealed the power of this image. Yellow and orange are not my favorite colors and I hardly ever consider using them in my own work. Yet, they totally work for me in this piece and I think a lot of it has to do with the way the subject and screen are lit. The light source is focused and placed directly above the model but on the front side pointing downward and slightly away from the scrim (at least that is what it looks like). Doing this has allowed the models impression to soften rather than be really hard and defined. It has given all of that yellow negative space the ability to naturally dissipate into other tones. The effect allows for what could be a very flat surface to have a lot of depth. It also created a stunning dynamic to the shot by way of silhouette. This person is without an identity. You cannot make out any defining features other than the hands and very little of the head. Not nearly enough information to determine gender, race, age, body type, weight, height, personality, anything beyond the fact that it is an entity; a solitary entity in space.

I cannot help but wonder, is this is the concept behind the title Fingerprints? A fingerprint uniquely identifies each and every single human being… but that knowledge also isolates us as individuals. There is no one just like me. Nor is there another just like you. The impression, the relief, those two hands and a partial face of a solitary figure self aware, yet void of an identity is all that is left behind. That could be anybody. That could be anybody at any point in their journey, or maybe it is the legacy a person leaves behind… I suppose we cannot know, only speculate.

But that is why this piece is so powerful to me.

I do not have a ton of suggestions on how to make this any better than it already is. But I did notice a very small detail… In the upper left hand corner, as far as you can get, the scrim cuts off. I did not see this for a long time but now I find it distracting. I would consider just trimming that edge flush. Other than that the quality is of the image is quite clean. The gradients are barely pixilated, but not enough to distract. It actually may just be the texture of the cloth… A quick run of a blending tool in Photoshop might clean that up, but really that is extremely picky of me and is nothing to worry about. I have seen this photography technique before (a scrim that is lit in the foreground and uses a model pushing from behind to make shapes, silhouettes, etc.), but it is not utilized very often so it is still fresh and original for me as a photographer to look at. Obviously, I think it has a lot of impact so…

A fine piece of work you have here… you should be very proud.

Hello there! This feedback is part of the contest held by

This is an interesting photo and something rarely seen. I like the idea and the choice of colour of the glass helps since it helps the viewer to focus on the shape of the person by being a light and soothing. Some things though can be done to improve the photo. Namely, the position of the person. If the person is in the middle of the photo, it will be better since you are wasting a lot of space on the right side. Another thing that catches my eye is the face. If the face is pressed more on the glass maybe the effect will be better or if the person pressed their face to the side it might have made a better effect. I am not sure if the effect regarding the face is intentional or not. Apart from that, the photo is clear, good light and technically sound. The distance between the glass and the person is good.Too close or too far and the effect you are trying to bring about is ruined.Good work and happy clicking
