I really wanted to go outside my comfort zone for this one. I wanted the somber feeling to fit the peace. It was a different concept than something I'd normally think, but I just had this in my head and really like the way it came out, even if it goes against my normal way of stylizing. Even from a realism sense, I usually like to give everything more "character". I like to draw the details, and it's hard to leave aspects like the face in a less distinct direct approach. Still, once again, I think it was for this best when it comes to this piece.

My first thought was pretty generic; monsters, demons, fire and brimstone, destruction...Pretty much the standard apocalypse, and seeing my normal fantasy works, it was pretty likely for me to do. Instead I thought a different approach would be a fun change for me, even if it wasn't as dynamic a picture as "epic battles" would have been. Ha ha.

A lot of special meanings in each of the objects and reasoning for choices, but I'll leave it to you, the viewer, to take from it what you will. I tried to leave many elements open to where they could be taken from a different point of view if you saw fit, for instance, some might take it that the background is merely in his head and is a metaphor for what's happening to him, or to take it quite literal. It was just fun to put so much concept in every part of the piece.

As a Fallout3 devotee, I went in the "literal" direction. This guy could be one of ghouls who survive by mutating, mebbe involuntarily. The missile leaving his area after all of the destruction seems like it would be a retaliatory strike, which is what guided my choice. With all the "impending violence amidst utter destruction"-style art already well-covered, this was a good way to approach an apocalypse from the frail mortal view.

With all his emotions amped to overload, your choice to keep the facial expressions minimal is perhaps the best move. Nice job all around.

Thanks! There's definitely a lot of amazing competition in this one, so I'll need it! I think mine may be a little bland with the somber approach I used compared to some of the entries, but we'll see. Thanks again.
