Description
Liftoff of space shuttle Freedom on STS-280, the first crewed flight of the Shuttle-II system.

Shuttle-II is capable of launching fully autonomously, but can carry a crew capsule in its payload bay (note the two docking windows visible here). In event of a failure, the crew capsule can eject and return the crew to the surface during any phase of the mission.

The Shuttle-II uses the same Liquid Rocket Boosters and re-usable OPAM engine module first flown with Shuttle-C , making the LRB tanks the only part of the system not reused.
