Description www.arts.gla.ac.uk/ScotLit/ASL… Iain Banks' mind bending, multiverse hopping spy movie from a parallel world in which an outfit called The Concern behaves alarmingly like a cross between The Culture's Special Circumstances division and 'The Business'* with attitude, and across more than just one version of good old Earth, or is it.... Calbefraques?

Marvelous piece; well done.  Such a simple composition yet quite complex with
flat surface textures that border on the three dimensional.

Thank you. I have a certain fascination for the 'accidental' abstract expressionism that arises from attempts to over paint graffiti. There is under painting, then 'painting' then over painting, often using cheap colours that don't quite match; black on black that is really sludgey brown on sludgey grey, black that isn't black because the sun is shining on it, or it's reflecting some other local colour. Very basic enhancements of carefully selected areas were designed to increase the ambiguity and bring out subtle details. What is painted over what? Which is foreground and which is background? Is something emerging or being concealed? These are all basic questions which Rothko posed to the viewers of his abstracts, usually leaving them deliberately unresolved.

The title Transition came to me as being about the essence of this piece, the change between one layer of reality and the next. Transition the novel, by Iain Banks, treats of alternate worlds as ever branching twigs on a multiversally outwardly growing tree. There is one twig on this unimaginably infinite tree that is not called Earth, but Calbefraques. There they know about all this and have access to a drug called septus which enables the user's mind to 'possess' a body in a different 'twig' or world. There is an organisation called 'The Concern' which is a bit like a cross between The Business and The culture. They'd like more of the multiversal 'twigs' to be like the kind of world they'd be content to live in.... and so, like the Culture's 'Special Circumstances' division, they interfere. The people who do this are called Transitioners, and a trip from one world to another is called a Transition.
