Description I have been working on this for about a week, off and on, mostly off. Once again, Hard Light on the top layer came to the rescue.

People have asked me how I come to build such images. I'm not going to share specific coloring algorythms because I spend a lot of time searching them out and figuring out what works with the others, and often more than not what doesn't work. My method of choosing coloring algorythms is nothing scientific. I start at the very first one and continue to run through each one seeing if there is anything that will work with the formula. Each coloring algorythm is modified for different formulas, so I gave up on saving that "special" one a while back. Some have specific purposes, such at the framing, lettery, and special lighting that is generic for every formula, so those are saved, but overall the bulk of what I do is nothing more than meticulous searching and thousands of tweaks until the final image is finished, plus a huge dose of trial rendering to see what the finished product looks like. Anyway, this was created using a Hypercomplex Julia formula. It has some interesting results if you find the right layering.

Thanks, those really thick glass windows inspired it.

I like the way the glass seems to 'bubble' kind of like an old fashioned tv screen. Interesting shapes and overall design. Very worthy of a DD. Congrats on that!

It's always good to know! I agree! Congratulations ~jeff!
You contributed a lot to the fractal community! That is one thing I admire about you as well as featuring others to have a voice [show and tell their work]!
DA should be thankful ...a lot, I mean a lot! Anyways, I hope you CONTINUE doing that and you TOO, to go forward in your JOURNEY creating fantastic fractal imagery!

My goal with fractals is three fold. 1-show people there is a lot more to them than spirals and flowers, 2-do things hopefully no one else has seen before, 3-help anyone in the field that asks for help. This image wasn't my strongest image, but it was a perfect feature because it was so overwhelmingly non-fractal looking. I had a lot of comments from people that were shocked that it was a fractal, so the amount of faves means nothing to me because I reached one of my goals yesterday. It's a good time to be working in fractals and I'm eagerly looking forward to the future of the art ( and v4 of UF ).

Yeah, I think we have the same thought process on the spiral thing! I have a lot of those when I was starting. Flower deviations I still have those...but I know as long as I keep on practising the art of fractal, it will always evolve to something new and fresh, something exciting not only to the creator but to the viewer. If one really put his/her heart to it. Sometimes it's not necessary to push the envelop on once quest. Because it grows on you naturally as you stay with it [fractaling], I think you notice it too to yourself as you do a fractal recently and then look way way back from the very first fractal, then the mid stage you ever made. It is so incredible! Self satisfaction each and evertime I produced a wonderful fractal. And it goes on and on. That's the feeling inside always. I wish I could put a more specific words to what I feel?

Being a psuedo-mathie (comp sci major dragged kicking and screaming through all sorts of mathematical torture), I find this lovley. There is such a massive divide between the math and art community, and being simultaneously immersed in both, I see that there is much artistic value to math and vice-versa. Creations such as this, I see as a fantastic little bridge between the two. Good work!

Thank you very much. It's funny I always here stories of fractals in the math department, but haven't seen any, or even covered them. I guess the college level is too fast paced to dig into that department, or maybe it's because I'm taking technology based math. Fractals have really come a long way since the new programs have gotten popular. I still think it's an artform that is often misunderstood and sometimes looked down upon, but the field is growing as more people discover them. They've changed a ton in the last ten years, and I can't wait to see where they go in the next 10.

WOW! It looks really nice. But i'm pretty much confused. fomula? fractals? algorythms? I'd never heard of those things. Are there any website that talk about this kind of art?

Aeires In reply to Zevrae [2005-05-18 21:19:22 +0000 UTC]

In a nutshell, fractals are images created using math formulas. The fractal generating programs take all kinds of formulas, crunch them together and build the image. The good news is you don't have to completely understand all the math behind it. If you did, I would be doing finger painting these past two years instead.

Anyway, this was made with Ultra Fractal [link] . You can try the trial version for free if you're interested, and it has a great tutorial in the help files. Here's some links on the nature of fractals themselves, so that'll give you an idea of their history and kinda what's going on without getting too technical. [link] [link] [link]

Someone could have put a gun to my head and told me to answer or die,
"Filters or Fractals?"

And I'd be dead right now.

Looks like the basketweave, lacquer, and halftone filters in Photoshop decided to play Twister late one night.
and this ..is the outcome.

You know, I have photoshop and just can't wrap my brain around all the tricks and filters. If you put a gun to my head and told me to do this without a fractal program, I'd be dead too.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Aeires In reply to vanity-insecurity [2005-05-18 21:39:51 +0000 UTC]

I tinker, but haven't figured out how to do the major work. If I could have mastered the layering tricks, I think I actually could have done some abstract work, instead I never could produce things worthy of posting so I threw all my focus on getting my fractal programs to make the image as well as possible so that it wouldn't need postwork.

You know, its all in Layers, once you learn the tools and how to use layers, you're unstoppable.

I never have used a layer Mask, the eraser brush is my best friend when I blend my images.

Start tinkering more, thats exactly how I started.

i've gotta be honest, i'm not a fan of fractal art, seems kind of cold an emotionionless. maybe just because i relate it to math
i shouldn't judge it because i've never tried but generally how much of making fractal art is artistic expression and how much is punching in random numbers to make a pretty picture?
i do like the way the light falls on the blocks in this one

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aeires In reply to phattony227 [2005-05-18 02:18:47 +0000 UTC]

Interesting perspective. I'm waiting on my final grades from my last math class in university and I'm thrilled my math requirements are finally going to be over. I'm not a fan of math because I never really understood all the real world applications to it, at least not in the warp speed that they teach it. Anyway, part of fractal creations is manipulating values and parameters, but it's also part discovery. Sometimes it seems like a battle trying to get something beautiful, or at the minimum, post worthy, but there's a lot of joy in the victory when you know you have something worthwhile. For me, it's the challenge of breathing some semblance of life into the image as it's being created.

It was the blocks and lighting that tied this all together when I was making it, so I appreciate the feedback.

i see, i feel simialarly with pottery, sometimes it seems like i'm not expressing much with it but it's really more about the process of creating something to me. kind of meditative really and the finished products, i must say, can be beatiful if not expressive

Each to his own. Personally, I don't limit liking an image simply because of the method involved, but that's me.

kargath64 In reply to Aeires [2005-05-18 01:08:43 +0000 UTC]

Fractal stuff can transcend its origins if used as a base or after heavy post (like this work), but most of the works are really just boring and same-y (like seeing a bajillion slight edits of the "Victoria" model for poser). Especially given that you can just hit 'randomise' until something comes up.
