Description
Ingenuity's parking spot during Mars solar conjunction. The image was taken by the RTE (Return To Earth) color camera after the end of the 66th flight, on November 3, 2023 (Sol 961 of the Perseverance mission).
The camera is mounted in the helicopter's fuselage and pointed approximately 22 degrees below the horizon.
The helicopter will continuously take images during the Mars solar conjunction to learn more about how the grains of sand move on the Red Planet. Scientists will review Ingenuity's images after conjunction to determine if grains of sand have been moved by the wind. They plan to compare the footage with weather data collected by the Perseverance rover, which is parked 3,471 feet (1,058 meters) away during conjunction.
On the left side of the image, one of the helicopter's legs is visible just out of frame. Just to the right of that is one of several "footprints" made before the helicopter lifted off on a previous flight to reposition itself.
