Description My take on Fenris from Dragon Age 2. I drew this for a video game show at Evermore Nevermore.

Note: I like the elf designs in Dragon Age Origins better, so I paid homage to that by having his portions similar to a small man (like the elves in DA: O) versus the twiggy people in DA2.

A lovely romanced Fenris. I love the his little smile, even with the line of blood on his nose.

fantastic job! i like how it has the red on one side and blue on the other. and that blood echoes hawke's trademark smear. (what IS that on hawke's face, anyway? never did figure that out... : X ) and yes, twiggy alien elves need not apply, thank you!!

Very nice version, I prefer the DAO elves as well, the first time I saw the Dalish I thought "BOBBLEHEAD TOYS!"

btw Tevinterfugitive isn't you on Tumblr is it? Just curious

LOL, nope, piratereject on Tumblr.

I totally agree, the DA2 elf style doesn't really do it for me. I'm completing a Tallis picture this week, and it's a pain in the ass. I am modifying it slightly as well.

Great colors, I really like this foggy blur foreground/background your working here. The front armor plate is done really well. Love to see you do a knight of some sort.

Also... You live!

He's at normal proportions! I drew him for a video game art exhibit.. the elf redesigns were a little thin in DA2 for me.

This is my take, for a video game art show. I liked the elf portions better in Dragon Age Origins.

The elves look weird in dragon age II. Almost alien. In the first one they just looked like regular people with pointy ears, but now their eyes are all screwed up and they look different.
I sort of like it better though. It makes them seem even more different from humans.

aelice In reply to Ghost-of-Raven [2011-07-23 07:00:16 +0000 UTC]

It's hard, because there could have been an AWESOME middle ground with the elf designs (making them man-like but keeping in elfish traits). In DA they felt like nimble little humans with pointy ears, but not elf-like. In DA2, I almost would have wanted to call them fae instead of elves if I hadn't know what they were.

Sometimes when series take liberties with elves, it works out pretty well. I liked the take FFXI did, for example. Some of the character models do look strange, but the Elvaan kingdom in FFXI and their character designs really shone to me.

Thanks so much for the feedback, though. I love hearing other people's takes on the change from DA designs to DA2 designs. (I DID really like Flemeth's change)

Yeah, I just finished playing Dragon Age 2 and I was sad at the end. Well if you like feedback about the game, I'll give you this. Haha. I really liked the changes they made to the "interaction" in the second one. It felt a lot more real. The interaction with the characters almost felt real. And since your guy could actually speak, it was a lot better than the first one. I got so wrapped up in the story. Haha, I'm such a loser. But I think they did a great job with it. I felt like I actually knew the people.

I know people that say it's just another roleplay game, but to me it stands alone. I never really played a game like that before that seemed so real.
The only complaint I have is that the areas could have been a bit bigger. I felt sort of limited just being in Kirkwall and the surrounding ares. (Though it did have a point... Because the story was about the champion of Kirkwall, after all.)
But the first game had this sense of going on an epic quest. And it felt like you traveled all over the place and got lost in this huge world. And the second game had a more "homey" feeling where you get attached to a community and form close ties with one single place. Actually I kind of like that, I think they did a great job with it.

It's an amazing series though and I'm already excited for DA3. Haha, I hope I didn't bore you with my rants.

I have to completely agree with your feedback. I looooved both games, but the recycled art assets (and limited exploration) of DA2 was my major negative about that game. Beyond that, the story and characters were great. The complete poloraization between the Templars and the Mages was pretty annoying, though. DA showed a lot of Blood Mages who had more dimension to them, like Jowan.

Not to mention every single mage ends up going crazy in the end. Literally. I can't think of one mage that wasn't messed up/insane in some way or another.
Maybe once it got more popular they tried to make it a bit more "simple." Haha, the majority of people like to see things in black and white. Just a thought.

I see your point. I liked DAO for the grey areas.. like resolving the Circle (whether to kill them all or not). I played a blood mage, so I had to weigh the choice if I REALLY wanted a woman to die for me to barter with the demon or not.

Ghost-of-Raven In reply to aelice [2011-08-09 20:39:10 +0000 UTC]

I played a blood mage too. In both games actually. I found myself using blood magic all the time in the first game. But I barely used it at all in the second game. It barely seemed like they changed it at all... But I just lost interest in it I guess.
Oh, that's another thing. I reeeally liked the changes they made to the talent trees in the second game. It was so much easier. The layout was a lot better. And I think it was cool how each character had "perks" you got from the friendship or rivalry. (I know origins had that too, but it just seemed better in the second one.)

I also love that the rivalry system even exists! I love seeing how they respond to you as a friend or frenemy.
