Description
Exposure to zillions of artists is one of the principal drives I've had to improve as an artist and come to where I am today. This I owe to the dev community.I'm not putting myself on a pedestal here. I'm not a seasoned comic pro... hell, I wouldn't exactly call myself a pro yet, my first printed work isn't even on the shelves yet. However, I am a professional artist, and I think I have some knowledge and experience.
That's why it's time to give back to community. Pay it forward, so to speak.
These sketches are excercises in character rendering. I reallyrecommend you do the steps in the order listed. It really helps to speedily repeat the same craneofacial makeup several times, since it helps create muscle memory. They say teaching is learning, and I agree, I got more out of making this then I think people will get out of reading it.
Anyway, I hope it helps anyone working to become a better artist. And remember, be original. No technique is the superior (certainly not mine), and take what you get out of this tutorial and make it your own.
I'll try to whip out a female heroic, and then a male and female civilian version, soon.
Disclaimer is on the bottom. Ya damn hyenas!

Oh, I couldn't do that
The torso has already great cemented methods from better professionals, I recommend you look at Burn Hogarth's books.
I am planning to do one for different ethnicities of eye and nose combos, though...

well I'll be watching for those! I am going through Loomis head and hands right now and I was driving myself crazy trying to line things up and measure at the same time... the way that you've broken it down gives me a basic head shape almost instantly to work from! thanks

AHA! I thought so... it seems like a lot of comics artists use a lot of Loomis' construction methods, but I especially like the way that you turned it into simple, easy to remember, shapes. it really gave me a boost while going thru Loomis! can't wait for you to do the female heads.. I've been doing some by just changing the ratios of the the trap and triangle making them taper in different ways. (wow this got long) anyway THANK YOU AGAIN! now I'll be trying to look at everything as basic shapes based on the proportional measurements.

This is great. There's plenty of tutorials out there about basic face/head structure, but you've shown how to vary that to create unique features for different characters. Extremely helpful!

Thanks! Just some tips for the artist trying to build upon his style. Construction is the base for any technique.

Just... Just... wow! That's fantastic, and it will be so useful... Especially for the three-quarter angles, I've always had trouble with those. Any chance you do the same with other features of human anatomy?

AenTheArtist In reply to SOSPuff [2008-07-31 23:37:05 +0000 UTC]
Well, for the rest of the body I would recommend using, as a base, Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy, which is a staple for comic artists. That's the basic technique.
That, and I also recommend Wizard's How To Series, the Heroic Anatomy volume.
The rest is just using your judgement to make fantastic and dynamic posing.

Oh dear me... I love you already XD
I'm much more used to drawing women so this comes quite handy since I'm still trying to make my men look like men and not girlish boys.
And it's also a great tutorial btw, very comprehensive and simple. Great job

I'm glad I have helped you contribute to the noble crusade against femme-looking men and wiping the blemish that is their presence off the face of this world.
Heheh, j/k. It's not that I hate Shoujou/Shounen anime or anything, it's just that I believe there are much more elevated styles, both in japan and in the rest of the world. However, they are a great start for people wanting to be artists due to their simplicity. But then it's time to grow up right? I know I use to draw like this, at least in my teens.
Glad I could help, thank you for your kind words and the fave

Well I got nothing against them either... I'm just so used to drawing women that my men end up looking like them XD (apart from what my avatar looks like, I don't draw anime/manga style... at least not the stereotypical one).
And you're welcome

I have the same difficulties, due to bad initial learning from manga books and overdrawing girls, my guys tend to look all alike and very femenine sometimes. I am trying to brake my stereotypised brain, though and have a semi-realistic manga style.
thanks for the tut aentheartist!!
