Description Exposure to zillions of artists is one of the principal drives I've had to improve as an artist and come to where I am today. This I owe to the dev community.

I'm not putting myself on a pedestal here. I'm not a seasoned comic pro... hell, I wouldn't exactly call myself a pro yet, my first printed work isn't even on the shelves yet. However, I am a professional artist, and I think I have some knowledge and experience.

That's why it's time to give back to community. Pay it forward, so to speak.

These sketches are excercises in character rendering. I reallyrecommend you do the steps in the order listed. It really helps to speedily repeat the same craneofacial makeup several times, since it helps create muscle memory. They say teaching is learning, and I agree, I got more out of making this then I think people will get out of reading it.

Anyway, I hope it helps anyone working to become a better artist. And remember, be original. No technique is the superior (certainly not mine), and take what you get out of this tutorial and make it your own.

I'll try to whip out a female heroic, and then a male and female civilian version, soon.

Disclaimer is on the bottom. Ya damn hyenas!

Brilliant!

As a person who can do a decent variety of female facial structures but flounders with the male side I thank you for this. Very helpful and easy to follow with a lot of things that, when I see them like this, seem like they should be common sense.

Since this is a pretty old piece I'm now going to go browse your gallery and see your newer work^^

That's what puzzled me when I woke up to almost 1000 messages... "I haven't anything DD noteworthy lately..."

FreckleOnMyPalm In reply to AenTheArtist [2011-09-17 18:08:53 +0000 UTC]

You know...I've noticed that a vast number of the DDs I've looked at lately are pieces from a number of years ago and that there seem to be a lot more tutorials too (or maybe it's the same number it's always been and I'm just noticing them more)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AenTheArtist In reply to FreckleOnMyPalm [2011-09-17 19:17:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeap. Like I said in my Journal, a piece needs to circulate to catch the mods attention, and sometimes that takes a couple years.

i will admit i have only read a couple of comics in my time, but reading this is quite interesting it looks so strange how the head can be drawn. Thank you for this, i may not be a comic artist in any shape or form but it gives an interesting insight on how to make your character drawings that little more unique..

im sure somebody else has already told you, but you actually use the term 'type C' twice! type D appears to have been incorrectly typed =/

that being said, this is an incredible tutorial, DD well deserved

Aside from Alfred, no love for DC. Is that a matter of personal preference or just a consequence of the fact that most of DC's male heroes have a nearly identical craneofacial makeup?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AenTheArtist In reply to Art3misEntreri [2011-09-17 15:13:32 +0000 UTC]

They don't have a lot to work with, story-wise. I too prefer Marvel for it's more diverse characters.

Art3misEntreri In reply to AenTheArtist [2011-09-17 16:13:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, I wouldn't say I prefer Marvel, sure they have a lot of characters that are simply more approachable and lifelike than DC's, but I'm still very fond of a certain few DC's heroes and villains. As far as reading comics goes, I'd say it's a 50:50 split for me.

ace stuff, very informative! I'll bear this in mind in my next sketching session. I love your style, comicbooky but different too. Must be hard to carve out your own style when it comes to comic work.
New member on my watch list methinks.
