Description
"Aina..." She heard him whisper her name from where he stood, completely frozen. A low growl rumbled from the wolf as it bared its teeth and stalked steadily closer. A phantom pain struck her leg when she recalled the agony of the thick desert brambles tearing into her flesh. If she ran now, she’d feel that same pain again when the beast tore into her.An elbow roughly pushed into her abdomen; the sting brought her back to her senses. "Aina…” Nieve whispered again. A gutteral snarl jerked her gaze back to the wolf and pulled every muscle taut. “Aina!” Her eyes locked on Nieve’s again. She felt like a rabbit ready to bolt. Somehow he managed to look controlled despite the fear she could see mirroring hers. “I want you to slowly get up and run for that village."
“Me?” Fading sunlight glinted off his sword and the realization hit her. He was going to be a decoy while she escaped. "No, I'm not leaving you to-"
"Just do what I tell you," he hissed.
Another chill ran up Aina’s spine at the bite in Nieve’s tone. Without him, she had nothing, no one to turn to for help, and here he was telling her to abandon him.
He added, “I’ll be right behind you,” sounding more gentle. His eyes were pleading.
The animal’s growling and snarling set a constant alarm knocking against her skull, harder and harder the nearer it came. Biting her lip, she tried to rationalize the situation before they were both mauled to death. With the wolf one spring away, she didn’t have time to weigh her options. Nieve slowly began to rise to his feet, keeping his guard up as she did the same.
It was just a single wolf—she told herself—and Nieve was more agile than he appeared. She took one small step first, then another, and another. Then, she made the mistake of glancing past Nieve and her stomach took a sharp twist. The beast was close enough now to see it was bigger than she realized, easily dwarfing her and Nieve both. It snapped at Nieve’s ankle and he jumped back, nudging her further away from them. Aina took a slow, trembling breath and exhaled; she chose to have faith, then…
She ran.
