Great capture! Nice composition, and the light across the edge of the kitten's head gives it a nice feeling of emerging from the shadow. Only issue is that it feels like the image could use just a little sharpening overall. Still, a really fun picture!

RAW images aren't necessary. Just use the sharpening feature in your favorite image processing software (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Gimp, etc.). There are different methods of sharpening, and it takes some practice to figure out how each works, how much to apply, etc., but in the end it helps a lot.

using manual focus seems to help me, too. my autofocus has been broken for a year, now, and unless i need to do something where speed is an issue, i don't miss it!!

Kittens are precious! We have had a lot of them. Now we just have one older cat. I don't know what will happen after he goes. We don't have the money for animals we used to.

This is true. And I'm not a dog person anyway. My husband wants to keep a cat, and I'm thinking about whether ever to get another one. They do lighten up life quite a bit with their antics. I'll have to wait and see, I guess.
