Kate's turned into a more morally-gray character than I initially envisioned. Sort of a fallen hero. She's done some nasty stuff and it shows in her eyes, as well as the scars on her face. She's also a bit of a snob; years of being in charge and lacking sympathy for others has made her a sharp and overbearing person. She despises pirates on principle and refuses to believe they can change for the better.
