Description
Aaaaaaaaand fifth thingy for 100 themes art challenge . I have so many projects that I haven't continued, so I'll just work on those from now on... or at least try...I am very very happy with this. First realistic animal portrait thingy I managed to finish without getting lazy halfway through.
So, the story. This is Hachiko. I am too lazy to tell you all of it, but he always used to wait at the train station for his owner to come back from work. Which he continued doing after his owner died for like 9 years.
Used a screenshot from the movie as a reference pic. And I actually remembered the whiskers this time! Thanks to my mom, though.
I used Caran d'Ache Pablo coloured pencils for this, about, uh, 10 of them? 6 browns, 3 greys and 2 blacks. Or something along those lines. And just basic faber castell pencils for sketching...

Hello! I'm coming from the tagline with the tag Bright
I chose this artwork because it had the light colours. And the snow just made it even brighter. Even though I know the story of Hachiko, and I couldn't really call it bright as it would be more dark and sad, but this picture surely is bright. And Hachi's spirit is the brightest of them all for sure!
I'm actually really impressed by the realistic look you had achieved! Yes, it still has the drawing look as the colours are bright, but I wouldn't call it an disadvantage or mistake, not at all! This is really lovely shaded! You have wonderfully used the different browns in the fur and managed to make it really alive and with lots of depth!
Honestly I can't draw realistic animals for my life, so I can't really give you any advice on the anatomy or stuff like that. But I can give you few tips on the techniques. While for this particular picture it works perfectly fine, but you shouldn't shade with black. It mutes all the colours and makes the whole picture greyer... Do some experiments with giving shades with different colours and shades of your pencils! Personally I find the dark blue/navy the best for shadows.
Also while you have mastered the wonderful flow of the fur, you haven't managed to get the best coloring technique for big and flat surfaces. Like the bricks and the dark background. Personally I can see the strokes of your pencil. There are strokes going || and = crossing each other giving the bar effect. I know that there is one acknowledged artist working with the bared coloring, but usually it's not good. my art teachers had always told to avoid that. While there is the technique called crosshatching, you shouldn't let the lines to meet an 90 degree angle. Get your first hatches down and change the angle just a little bit for the cross hatches. That way you will result way smoother outcome! And more solid colour. While the bricks doesn't look that bad.. But the dark background kinda is on a lot lover level that the other parts of picture...
Anyways, I really adore how this picture turned out for you! And I hope you'll do more amazing drawings in future!
Since this a tagline~ Your tagword is blue and the next person is

Thanks for the feedback!
Ummmm, okay. So much text. o____o
I guess part of the reason of the bricks not being all that even is the texture of the paper. But thanks for the colouring tips, I'll try those next time I do something similar!
As for the background... I always get too lazy on backgrounds. Lol. Maybe I should've just left it white. But thanks again! :3

Of course!
Were you expecting less? This is the tagline after all~
Texture of the paper is ibe, but there are the strokes visible. At least for my eyes..
I'm glad I could help you somehow! Good luck on your next picture!
Either leaving it blank or getting the work done properly would be the best.you actually didn't beed to shade the whole space dark, you could have just accebted the edges you know~ great effect and doest take so much effort as full coloring~

Hello !
I just wanted to start off by saying I love this piece, and you did an excellent job with the dog's proportions which can be quite tricky at the angle you chose.
Though in my opinion it could use a little more pencil work in the background to give it a more clean look with a burnished finish, the fur is an excellent choice for having a layered effect because it gives it that desired texture of a double coat while still keeping it light. I believe the contrast between the two textures would give this piece that extra boost you may be looking for!

Thanks for the feedback!
Well first I was going to make it a digital painting, so I made a sketch in ArtRage and printed it. and used the grid function, so that helped a lot. :mewo:
Yeah, I'm too lazy with backgrounds... the bricks I coloured properly, but since in the photo the background was blurred I was all meh and just coloured it quickly. I guess I'll blend the background more next time or something.

Ah I love the story of Hachiko! It was a great choice!
I can really see the lonely atmosphere projecting from the piece in the expression and pose, and you've done the anatomy well.
Comparing it to the original screenshot, I think you could have added some darker shading to give a greater sense of depth.
Also in the future maybe try blending the background more so its texture doesn't distract from the focus?
P.S. Did you hear that they've reunited the statues of Ueno and Hachiko?

I really liked the drawing!... but then I read your description, and that about broke my heart..... and now I don't know how to deal.... but I do like the use of gradients in your drawing. I would suggest you use a bit more implied line in the face, like how you did with where the but of the dog meets the snow. But overall, I think you've done a really good drawing! KEEP IT UP!!!!

Great drawing, though facial expression do not really convey how he is feeling. Looking at the original photo, eyebrows are a big factor for this which is missing here.

Voi että kun tää on hieno! Tykkään varsinkin noista silmistä kun niissä on niin haikean sulonen katse...
Ja ja ja Hachiko on vaan niin surullinen ja ihana leffa...

Great drawing!
What I really like is that you can see the dog's sadness in his eyes, it's very difficult to capture emotions in drawings.
The fur looks really very realistic, but in your reference photo the fur looks softer. You can achieve a softer look by first drawing a layer just for the base colour and then drawing the second layer with the details.
I'd recommend you these tutorials for the fur: fav.me/dnun9e
cataclysm-x.deviantart.com/art…
fav.me/dts33w (it's for black and white drawings, but I think it's useful for you)
But you don't have to stick exactly to the reference, your drawing is great anyway

Thanks for the feedback!
The fur is actually a lot softer, I just have problems with scanning... And I'm not that good with photoshopping the image afterwards to make it look more like the original. :/ Thanks for the tutorials anyway, they seem helpful!

Arythya In reply to aevrynn [2015-04-04 17:47:42 +0000 UTC]
I had problems with my scanner too. The colours were much brighter than on the original and the contrast was very low.
What I do now is that I take a photo of my drawing at daylight. The results are much better, even if you don't have a good camera (you can even use your mobile's camera, it will probably be better quality than a scan).
You should try this too

Haha, cool! Why are you learning? And yeah, it can get a bit complicated even to us Finns sometimes.
On aina mukavaa, kun suomea osaavia löytyy täältä.
I checked your gallery, those fractals look awesome! ^^

It started with finnish music (maybe you know some of them: Ensiferum, Nightwish, Insomnium, Frosttide,...) I'd like it more if they sang in Finnish language
I got interested in finland and it's such a beautiful country...
One good thing in Finnish is that you don't have articles like for example the French le/la.
You've written that you're happy to see someone who speaks Finnish here on deviantart, right?
Thank you very much

aevrynn In reply to Arythya [2015-04-06 08:54:18 +0000 UTC]
Okay, cool. I don't really listen to Finnish music that much, most of the Finnish music I like is sung in English.
I've listened to some Nightwish at some point, haven't heard of the others.
Haha, yeah, the lack of articles is nice. And lovely nature here too. Especially in Karelia, Koli was awesome. I love swamps, too, just haven't been to that many of them. I'd love to visit Lappland during winter some time, I've never seen the Northern Lights. :/
Yes, that's right.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching me back, btw.
Ich kann auch ziemlich gut Deutsch sprechen, aber die Grammatik ist schwer... Ick kann also auch lange Texte schreiben, nur mit sehr viele Fehlern. Und ich kann auch die Artikeln nicht erinnern.

Puhut paljon paremmin saksaa kuin minä suomea (this sounds wrong)
Suomi on kovin kaunis maa.
Ymmärrän, että saksa kielioppi on painava.
Have you learned German in school? Your German is really good.
I'd like to see the Northern Lights too, they're so beautiful.
I just googled Koli and it is so gorgeous
Writing in Finnish language with you could help me to become better in Finnish, and you in German

Die Satz wäre also Ymmärrän, että saksan kielioppi on vaikeaa.
Yeah, I go to a German school. So I started learning German in third grade, and now I have most of my subjects in German (German, biology, physics, chemistry, math, gym class...)
They are, it was possible to see some Northern Lights here in Helsinki a while back, but I live quite close to the city center so there's too much light to see much... and I was too lazy to go outside anyway. x)
Yeah, I guess we could be some sort of pen pals or something? With DA notes? Idk, do you have better ideas?
Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!

Paljon kiitoksia
I think notes are the best way
So painava is the same as heavy and vaikea is difficult?
And yes, it's der Satz and Finnish is in German Finnisch
So in Finland you have a german school? That's really cool, unfortunately in Germany we don't have Finnish schools.

Yeah, that's correct.
Heh, okay. I suck with articles... Ah, of course, just forgot the "c".

Heh, well, Finland is quite a small country, I don't know if there are any Finnish schools anywhere except in Michigan and maybe Sweden. I guess there were many German immigrants here or something.
