I can imagine Konata befriending Tomoko and helping her to open up to people while appealing to Tomoko's otaku instincts as that is what Konata is too.

Same here. I felt bad for Tomoko as she didn't have any friends at all and was too nervous to say a word to anyone at her school. Also, her younger brother whose bigger then her acts like a frustrated jerk to her which annoyed me.
