Description
...without Temeraire. I simply couldn't squeeze a dragon of his size into the picture.FULLVIEW for details!
Also, allow me to shamelessly advertise my second Temeraire fanfic, based on the craziest fanfic idea I've ever had: [link]
You surely remember when in book one Jane told Laurence that Laurence too might be asked to provide a few officers for the Corps, but he had to wait till his dragon turned ten. Well, in this fic Temeraire has definitely turned ten, and Laurence's prudishness takes a brutal beating.
I'm currently re-reading the series, and today I decided I finally might be bold enough to say that I like Temeraire better than Harry Potter. Wow. I never thought that would happen!

Aw, Emily is so cute! But Tharkay looks too young/pretty, IMO.
I think my favorite (human) characters in the books are Jane and Granby. They seem more practical than the others.

I don't like Jane, but I adore Granby. But my favourite human is Laurence, he is so stupidly noble you simply must love him. Most of the time I feel like giving him a hug and telling him to stop being so noble... And when he blushes... LOL. He always blushes!
Yeah, Tharkay might be a little young, but we don't know his exact age...

Yeah, Laurence's sense of honor gets in the way of his common sense sometimes. XD

The scar is there, although on the darker side of her face, so it does not stand out very much.

Um, I'm on the second book (Throne of Jade) at the moment and I've been wondering, who's Tharkay? And which book does he make an appearance in?
Wonderful art! I've been trying to picture the characters for ages and this is just perfect!

Tharkay first appears in book three where he has a major role. In books four and five he has smaller roles, but he is very likely to have a major role in book six again.

Ohhh! Thanks for clearing that up! I was panicking for a bit 'cause I thought I'd missed something! I've got the rest of the series on reserve at the library now. Hopefully, I'll be able to read them soon!

Absolutely astounding work! Exactly how I pictured them (well not Tharkay, since I had something different in mind) but still great

I didn't feel like drawing Berkley. Chenery and Warren are minor characters (actually, I don't even know how I should imagine Warren, Novik never really gave a desccription of him...)

Indeed? That sounds great. Actually, gold isn't really a set colour for aviators in Temeraire, only green is. The only gold things they are supposed to have on their clothes are the bars on their shoulders and probably buttons, but I couldn't help giving them some more gold. I thought they looked better like that.

Did you hear about the movie? I heard/read Peter Jackson's producing.

I've heard about Peter Jackson doing it, but no date has been set for filming so far, so... perhaps it will never be done. Why, we were promised an Artemis Fowl movie at least seven years ago, and so far no movie has come out...

In some ways I almost don't want them to make Temeraire into movies, for fear of them ruining it.
Did they really? I hadn't heard anything about it.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AgiVega In reply to white-soldier [2009-09-25 05:58:22 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I too fear they would ruin Temeraire, but only if they choose someone unsuitable for Laurence's role. I think they could make a nice CG of Temeraire, but a wrong actor for L would totally ruin the whole thing. Then again, there are some movies made of books that turned out quite okay. I for one like the Harry Potter movies (or most of them), and the actor choices were fine too, with the exception of some minor characters.

This is fantastic. I was interested to note your take on Jane Roland - she appears a lot more...umm.... preoccupied with sex in your works than she seemed to me in the novels. Forgive the uncouth description, I couldn't word it any more elegantly.
Anyway, I've read all the series and your rendition is beautifully stylized and well made. Faved, and may the Temeraire movie come soon!

Thanks, glad you like the pic! For some reason Jane always seemed a very sexual person to me, perhaps because it was her who seduced Laurence (after only a few days of having known him), not the other way around. In my eyes, she's a little bitchy, forgive me the word, so I couldn't portray her any other way in my fanart, only the way I see her.

Arkandea In reply to AgiVega [2009-09-14 06:46:11 +0000 UTC]
Haha, fair enough! I myself always saw her instead as very eccentric, all those absurd comments she makes to Laurence like "I'd offer, but Excidium is too badly needed. Maybe Catherine would do for you?" It seems like she's got no idea of how unscrupulous that stuff is, I find it amusing
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AgiVega In reply to Arkandea [2009-09-14 09:37:08 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, she indeed makes weird comments all the time, and that makes me think whether she had no mother to teach her good manners... perhaps not even a father. I'd be really interested to know whoever brought her up. Emily too seems unaware of what she says is wrong sometimes (especially what she said in the feral's cave), but at least she's getting some proper education from Laurence. And well, we know that Catherine will not "do for Laurence" now, with Riley as her husband. But you know, that scene in which Jane talked about breeding in book one, made me think. She said that Laurence had to wait ten years before he was asked to "give the Corps a few officers". In ten years Jane would be too old to conceive, so she's pretty much out of the picture. But Emily will be just old enough for the task then. Hmm?

The scar is there, but on her left cheek, and you have to look carefully to see it, it blends a bit with the rest of her skin.

I wouldn't say this is really an SF novel - it's an alternate history novel with a touch of fantasy. After all, the only fantasy element is the existence of dragons, but there's no magic or anything of the sort...

I expect that I will have to wait at least till the summer of 2011 for the Hungarian translation (the Hungarian publisher is more than a year behind the English publications of the Temeraire series), but I'm going to order the original English version so that I can read it as soon as it's out. It's horrible to think it's still a whole year of wait! How many books have been published in the Netherlands so far? All five? In Hungary only three so far, we're getting the fourth in November, as far as I know. My mum is currently reading the fourth in English and struggling a lot with it - her English isn't very strong and Novik's JaneAustenish style is a bit hard to understand even for me, let alone for poor mum...

MsJDenver In reply to AgiVega [2009-08-01 18:34:12 +0000 UTC]
That's so irritating! Well the Netherlands isn't so far behind. I'm reading them in English too, it's sometimes difficult so I use a dictionary. In the Netherlands there are five books in English (logical) and all 5 in dutch. I thought that it didn't take a long time to translate it in dutch. Because previous year I wanted to read them in Dutch and they were all there. It's stupid that they aren't all five in Hungary. Maybe Hungarian is more difficult... My parents hate this kind of books, fictional books. They like to read spiritual books or something...

AgiVega In reply to MsJDenver [2009-08-02 16:57:43 +0000 UTC]
Hungarian is a difficult language, but that's not the reason why the translation is so behind - I think the reason is that the Hungarian publisher bought the rights for publishing the Temeraire series later than the Dutch one, also the Hungarian publisher doesn't want to publish more than two Temeraire books a year. 1 and 2 were published in 2008, 3 in June 2009, 4 will come out in November 2009, and I expect 5 to be out next year.
