Ok I finished the book just a few days ago.  Funnily I am right at a place atm similar to the fish part of the story (Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, it's about a 13 hours drive from where I live, so good for a week holiday). Just been looking at some of the fishes you mentioned today, there even was a decent sized turtle and lots of unicorns   Ningaloo Reef is pretty good as it is protected and the fish grow to their full size, so you get to see loads of large fish.  Oh and from our veranda we saw quite a few Humpback whales heading south, they are on their migration to the antarctic waters passing along the Western Australian coast at this time of the year.

I enjoyed reading most of it, I didn't like the dog scene at the refugee camp at all (I was thinking of this happening to my poor dog). Some of the illustration might not have been the way you did them, I was reading it on a monochrome kindle but they added some nice touches.  I liked the songs and rhymes you came up with. And yes it works well as a childrens' book and can be enjoyed by adults as well.

From what I know about you I guess that the appartment/house where Sunny lives with her parents and the two elderly ladies is something of your past either the way you lived or stories from your parents.  Not sure what the background of Simon's story is though.

Thank you for reading and thinking about it, Marcel!  I am really grateful

You are right - Sunny's room was ours, though neighbours are a bit exaggerated - we did have two old ladies, but not quite as picturesque.  Simon comes from my experiences of working with immigrants and a bit from documentaries, I suppose.  The dog scene is actually toned down a lot - and it does have a basis in reality, much more shocking than that... go figure.

And I am seriously jealous about the reef

You're welcome Anastasya!

Thanks for the info   Yeah humans can be real cruel.  I hadn't realised you're working with immigrants.

I am not at the moment - but I did for quite a few years.  As I have been a foreigner everywhere I lived, it seems like a natural thing to do
