Love the viewpoint and the harsh lighting. The high contrast makes the most of the textures and adds great drama to the shot.

I think it's effective because it does the opposite of most 'HDR' photos. This one pushes the dynamic range out towards the edges, where as most 'HDR' squeezes it all into the middle, getting rid of shadows as it does so.

Effects are much more fun with you tweak them. Indeed, IMHO, tweaking effects is the best bit. Well, maybe not quite as much fun as using several effects to make up one image, but close.
