While your modelling skills are excellent, the same cannot be said for the F-35. It's worse than the very fighters it's meant to replace with gimmicky stealth that doesn't work.

wow what a criticism about the F-35 the radar cross section of this aircraft is top secret so bug off

It's a fine model, but I can't take the credit. It's a model for MS FSX and the author is listed in the image description (Dino C.)

I think the F35 will do okay. I can't see it being an effective A-10 replacement, too expensive and I suspect the A10 can loiter longer, but as an F-16 replacement with heavy emphasis on strike missions it should do alright.

At between $21, 000 and $32, 000 per flight hour operational cost? Not worth it; not by a long shot.

Almost double the A-10 if it's at the top end!  (A-10C, ~$18000/flight hour?)

My favourite is the Gripen. $4700 per flight hour.

I'm not surprised by that, the Grippen is typically Swedish!

It's like getting all the best qualities of the Eurofighter and the Rafale at a fraction of the cost.

agnott In reply to Meema [2013-11-09 13:29:19 +0000 UTC]

I think that is over selling it slightly

The Grippen is a smaller and simpler aircraft with around half the carrying capacity of Typhoon.

The single engine doesn't offer the thrust to weight ratio afforded to the Typhoon by it's twin EJ200s, and the smaller airframe limits the numer of weapons stations and sensor performance (antenna size).

That said it is a good aircraft for Sweden and other countries who need a moderate fighter with good reliability, deployability (use from highways etc) and affordable running cost. This is why I'm not surprised Switzerland selected the Grippen over Typhoon.

That's where the Gripen E/F comes in.

The 'NG' does offer good enhancements, but at the cost of extra weight: the AESA radar, extra fuel, and heavier external munitions is going to sap performance although the engine as used in the F/A-18E/F is proposed for the NG, with ~5000 lbf more thrust than at present so perhaps it might even supercruse with a light fit, and be able to carry more without too much of a loss in performance over the C/D models.

Ohww... very nice model (the plane quality is amazing, probabily .DDS textures) and very good pic (i never known about this fan) showning the plane heavily armed.... and i already see this "drawn" in the ground in another picture and i known this airbase is located in United States, can you gime the airport name and code (i mean the four letters for exemple "UUBW"...), thanks for share the pic.

The model is from here [link]

The fan is only on the F-35B, used for vertical take off.

It is Edwards AFB, KEDW.

What type of fan is the jet?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

agnott In reply to Lodestar1 [2012-10-13 22:01:48 +0000 UTC]

It's a Rolls Royce designed and built lift system comprised of the contra rotating main lift fans
and a system of control jets.

The fans are 1.3m diameter and produce 20,000 pounds thrust.

agnott In reply to theF-man [2012-07-30 14:41:11 +0000 UTC]

The general arrangement borrows more from the Yak-41/141 than the Harrier. The Yak had the same style of swivel exhaust and a lift source just behind the cockpit too (in their case a pair of small jets).

The Yak aircraft pre-dated the X-35 by over a decade (dated by first flights) and prior to the cancellation of the Yak design Lockheed Martin invested a substantial amount into the project.
