Together we walked with skin that metNot yet one body, but two that had joined
We smiled and said things we truly meant
And happiness had gotten into us
Sometimes we would step and our feet would be in time
We'd hop over the cracks in the sidewalk's stone
And sometimes we'd miss a step and you'd fall behind
I'd take your hand again and then we'd be fine
You put inches between us
In the spaces between our ribs
I closed the spaces with melted rubber
And you let it slide again
Our appendages disentangled
We untied our knots but we walked together
And for almost a week you kept your mouth shut
You let me inhale the sound of our steps
The two of us walked side-by-side
On concrete streets by passing cars
You told me you didn't know what to feel
So I'll feel and you won't have to again
And maybe someday when we're walking together
Our hands will not touch
And a stranger will turn to their neighbor and say
I wonder what's gotten into them?
