Graphite pencil sketch of manatees; a mother an calf. I don't usually do backgrounds but I think this turned out well.
I drew this for mother's day a few years ago. Because my mum once saw a statue of a dugong and thought it was a parrot and I still think it's funny.

Manatess and dugongs are sirenians. They're not closely related to whales or seals, they became aquatic independently. They're all vulnerable to extinction due to human encroachment on their habitats. The largest species (Steller's sea cow) was hunted to extinction less than 30 years after it was discovered.
