Description
Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin ( November 2, 1699 – December 6, 1779) was an 18th-century French painter. He is considered a master of still life, and is also noted for his genre paintings which depict kitchen maids, children, and domestic activities. Carefully balanced composition, soft diffusion of light, and granular impasto characterize his work.Impasto is a technique used in painting, where paint is laid on an area of the surface thickly, usually thick enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible. Paint can also be mixed right on the canvas. When dry, impasto provides texture; the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas.
Chardin worked very slowly and painted only slightly more than 200 pictures (about four a year)
This artwork of Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin is a portrayal of realism showing the real things around him. This was completed in 1731 and one of the chosen and favored paintings by King Louis XV. Unfortunately, this artwork has been lost during the French revolution.
